I once read on this fourm " Any Duramax owner who cant change a fuel filter is not worth his weight in salt "

I have owned Duramax Duallys since 2003 and allways had the dealer change the fuel filter on them. ( Big Mystery and untamed territory for me )
Now the dealer wants $75.00 to do it.
I figured it's time I did some learning
I finally bought a fuel filter and just jumped right in to it.
I used an oil filter wrench to free it up. Not a lot of fun.. no room...
Managed to get it out after removing the WIF plug.
Put new O rings on the new one and screwed it in.
Opened the bleeder and pumped it up till I got a good stream of fuel and closed it up.
Got in the truck and fired it up first time :D
Other than a few scratches on my arm and a little bit of blood , It went well.
I think the Mystery is solved and I saved some bones

Now what do I do with 230 lbs of salt:D
:ro):ro):ro)ROCK ON !!!!!!!!

I'm gonna have to try this next time. Last time the filter needed changed I was gonna do it, but then I needed a tire rotation, so I let the dealer do it all. Cost $140, for everything, including the filter.

Actually, I need to do this now. Got back last night from a 1500 mile trip and my D. I. C. says my filter is down to 50%. I read here the way to do it on the NBS is to remove the passenger front wheelwell liner for access. Didn't read anything about opening a bleed valve, etc! I better do a search, huh?!

your not due for a filter change for awhile if you still have 50% left on your filter

The dealer told me I could not change my own filter after my injecters where done they said they have to do it or they would not do the injecters for free. I even told them I would bring in my own filter and they could watch me do it in the parking lot but that didnt work for them, they also made me pay for a oil change:( That is the only two things I have ever had to pay a dealer to do I always do all my own work unless for some reason its free. I trust myself more i guess. But have no one to yell at if its f'ed up.

I dont' know what you guys are using for the change point - 33%? 25%? 10%?, but I don't want to go too much longer as I have two other trips upcoming of about 1000 miles round trip each. Honestly, I would rather change it a bit early than too late and gt stuck on the side of the road.

As for pulling the battery; we're talking which battery? The passenger side I know but will only pulling one battery be enough?

Removing the plastic inner fender is the way to go on the NBS trucks, takes minutes, and no scraped up hands, the filter is hanging in the wide open space EZ-PZ
I would recommend buying a WIF wrench, I bought one after carefully (with a rag wrapping it) using WP pliers on mine and still marking the wif sensor up  My local Carquest had one in stock.

Cheers, Andy

I hate to admit being an ignoramus, but what is a "WIF" wrench? What does it look like?

I found the best way to change the filter is to jack up the right front side and take off the tire and just reach up under the plastic inner fender and spin it off. I will pull the inner fender back with my left hand and spin the new filter on.

Taking the tire off and putting back on is a bigger job then changing the filter. Changing the filter itself is a 5 min. job including changing over the wif and o-rings.

You dont have to open the bleeder either just pump it up till it gets hard to push in. If it doesnt start pump it up one more time. I have never had to pump it up more then twice.

The whole job is only 15 to 20 min.
