: The Most Powerfull Diesel Engine In The World!!!!!!!!!!
GUYS,
CHECK THIS OUT. IT'S THE BIGGEST AND MOST POWERFULL
DIESEL ENGINE IN THE WORLD. IT'S THE WARTSILA-RTA96-C, MADE BY SULZER. THE ENGINE IS A 2 STROKE, TURBO CHARGED, INLINE 14 CYLINDER, AND PUMPS OUT A WHOPPING 108,920 HP AND 5,608,312 LB/FT OF TORQUE, BOTH AT 102 RPM. THE SHAFT IN IT WEIGHS 600,000 POUNDS (300 TONS)! THE ENTIRE MOTOR WEIGHS 4,600,000 POUNDS (2800 TONS)! EACH CYLINDER DISPLACES 111,143 CUBIC INCHES OR 1820 LITRES! EACH CYLINDER PUTS OUT 7780 HP! THE TOTAL DISPLACEMENT OF ALL CYLINDERS IS 1,556,002 CUBIC INCHES OR 25,480 LITRES! THE ENGINE IS 89 FEET LONG AND 44 FEET WIDE. NOW, YOU ARE PROBABLY WONDERING, WHAT THE HECK WOULD AN ENGINE THIS BIG BE USED FOR. THE ENGINES ARE USED IN LARGE CONTAINER SHIPS. AND I THOUGHT A CAT D9 PISTON WAS BIG! WHEN I FIRST SAW THE SPECS ON THESE ENGINES I WAS IN SHOCK, AND YOU PROBABLY ARE ASWELL. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME AND YOU WANT TO SEE SOME PROOF AND PHOTOS, CHECK THIS WEBPAGE OUT......http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ccsshb/12cyl/
dozerboy 05-01-2005, 03:54 PM Now that is one hell of an engine.:ro)
coyotekid 05-01-2005, 08:31 PM Whoa! I'm speechless--that is truly impressive. I'd like to see a turbo on one of them!
hannaco 05-02-2005, 08:13 AM The turbo is hung off the back side of the block. Big enough to stand inside the housing.
Terrain Twister 05-02-2005, 12:27 PM Where's that shoehorn?!?! ):h
Forced Induction 05-05-2005, 04:52 PM I'm not confident on the RPM shown:confused: 102RPM seems VERY high for an engine this large. I have seen this engine many times before. Engines half this size run at lower rpm's, like in the neighborhood of 50 rpm and sometimes less.
If you do the math, the piston velocity of this engine:
98" stroke @ 100 rpm = 27.22 fps
Now take a 350 chevy engine @ 6000 rpm
3.48" stroke @ 6000 rpm = 29 fps
Now assuming you ran the chevy a little slower they would match, however, think about the weight of the piston and rotating assembly involved. While the chevy piston will weight 500g or so, these pistons are in the 1000's of lbs I would guess. Think about the force generated when the piston changes direction?? Acceleration and decceleration forces must be phenomenal!!
Just interesting when you start running some numbers.
Oh, just for giggles, with this engine running at 100 rpm it should only take the crankshaft 0.60 seconds / revolution!! Sounds pretty fast doesn't it, considering it has to cover 98" up and down in that time, not counting any dwell time!!
converted6.6 05-11-2005, 08:42 PM Imagine trying to fire that up after sitting at -40* for a week! You'd need a 5 gallon of ether.

I don't think so! Man.DE makes a 132,300 bhp Diesel model# 14K108ME-C :ro) Also a turbocharged 14 cylinder 2 stroke. Got to love that German engineering. Oh yeah, this is the same place the first diesel was produced by Rudolf Diesel himself
YZF1R 05-13-2005, 08:33 AM I'd hate to try and stuff the key for that thing in my pocket.:D Seriously though, how do you start an engine that big? Some sort of pony motor? Electric or diesel? I assume it's direct drive, and to reverse, the engine is stopped and then cranked the opposite direction.

I could not find a reference about starting the damn thing, but I would guess they use a steam turbine. These are BIG ships, they would have high pressure steam for heat, desalination and a bunch of other stuff. IMO Still very cool!
GMC2500HD 05-16-2005, 09:46 PM Wonder if I can squeeze that under the hood...That thing turns some serious TRQ...

i believe that engine is air started... they apply air pressure to a cylinder that is in the right position on down stroke and it will turn the engine over..
as for speed... 102 rpm is at overspeed on the engine. i think it is only suppose to go to 95 or 96 rpm, but overspeeding it will let it get past the 100,000hp mark
YZF1R 05-18-2005, 11:09 AM Thanks for the replies guys.
