: Zf-7 ?
SteelFuser 05-26-2009, 05:18 PM So any how, any where, is it even possible to have a 7th gear installed on our pickups. I know it's a blind shot in the dark but hey it's worth asking.
I do a lot of driving a freeway speeds would like to drop the rpm's down to about 1500 RPM's at 75MPH. I know the truck could pull it if I had another gear.
I have look into over/under drives before but I don't think they make one for dirtymax/zf6.
Any idea's? Or am I just talking out of my ass. Which I do from time to time.
BattleMax 05-27-2009, 11:11 AM Gear Venders makes something that would do what you want.
SteelFuser 05-28-2009, 12:08 AM Do they really? I thought I looked into them all. I was beginning to think I was crazy for even asking. Is it just me or could we use a higher gear? I just thought it would be good to get the rpm's down better mpg's and easier on the engine as long as it's not lugging to keep up.
SteelFuser 05-28-2009, 12:13 AM Anybody ever use one of these? I'm not really a fan of adding something else to brake but if it's my only choice it might have to do. damn $3500.00 that's some coin but I could get a super low and a super high. Anybody else have any opinions on if it would be worth it or any real world thoughts on it?
01Duramax6spd 05-28-2009, 09:22 AM Wow sounds just like what I need. Too bad it's $3500 .

BattleMax 05-28-2009, 11:12 AM I heard of some Dodge guys using them. You end up with a gear in between every gear you have now plus a double over drive. It would be great for drag racing with these transmissions. Towing would be allot better as well as rpms would hardly drop with up shifts. I think it would hold up just fine unless you were making 800+hp or higher. My truck seems to get the best mpg running 65-70mph, any slower and I get less mpg. I’m not sure if less rpms at those speeds would help the mpg or not? Driving 75mph on up it should help.
Jasondt2001 05-28-2009, 11:31 AM Let me see if i can find the thread, something about using engine braking and gear vendors is not recommended I think remember reading... So if you tow that might be an issue.
I'll see if I can link you the thread.

Well crap, that just bursts my bubble. Thanks for the heads up on the deceleration issues Jasondt2001. I thought We were onto something here. If I can't engine brake that makes my tranny and the exhaust brake pointless.
I know I have seen another company that makes the same sort of thing. It go's between the trans and t-case. I would like to use this one so I could have a low low in 4wd. I think this other company was called (black box) or something I'm not sure but I have seen it somewhere. On TV I think. What about the Klune V over/underdrive? Anybody used or heard anything about that?
Jasondt2001 05-29-2009, 07:41 PM Sure man! :thumb:
It is kind of weird that it can handle that much power only one way...
I just made an exhaust brake via EFILive and LOVE it - So I know what you mean about if you can't use it you'll pass!
SteelFuser 05-29-2009, 07:47 PM well double crap, Klune V is out. It's only a underdrive. I don't know what to do know. Maybe a 2 spd rear end. LOL. Thought about lifting and putting 37's on it with stock gears. Then I would be just putting even more strain on the drive train. I dunno at this point other than a seventh gear in my trans. Nobody has any fairy dust I can sprinkle on it and boom 7th gear. I mean come on there is a spot for it behind 6th on the shifter knob.
Anybody else?

Wow hold on there, How did you do that with EFI Live? I have heard of some cool stuff with EFI Live. Making a braking tune now thats cool. Do tell how you did this.
Jasondt2001 05-29-2009, 07:56 PM Someone told me to put the turbo vanes (as on the late LLY's and up are adjustable through ECM programming) closed like the medium duty trucks...
So when I let off the throttle, it creates a small amount of boost and creates brake horsepower.
You can't feel it very well empty, but, with a load on i was SHOCKED at how well it worked.
I LOVE efilive, it scares the crap out of me at times, but, at others it's the cat's meow :)
SteelFuser 05-29-2009, 08:59 PM Yeah I just need to quit dickin around and buy it. I went to a diesel shop in my town and asked him to put a dsp5 switch in my truck. That was in dec. He hasn't gotten back to me and I have asked a few times. I just need someone close to me that knows what they are doing with it to teach me some EFI Live skills, because I know when I get it I'm going to screw something for sure. I can't ever stop myself from messing with something that works just right. That's cool about the braking deal, it would save me 1300 bucks on my next truck. Why does it scare you sometimes?
Jasondt2001 05-29-2009, 09:03 PM You can download it for free at www.efilive.com.
It's SO powerful; and you can change SO many things...that scares me... I don't have the cash for a new motor because I did something BONE HEADED.
There's vendors on here that sell it, and can set you up w/ a free tune per purchase.
I WISH i could have the DSP5 switch, I know it's coming but not available for my years yet.
SteelFuser 05-29-2009, 09:30 PM Thats why I need somebody that knows it well. To teach me cause last time I checked a new Crate LB7 from Gm was like 12k. I know I would screw it up. I talked to SoCal diesel about it and when I asked him "Can I kill my engine if I do something wrong?" His reply was "oh yes you can kill your engine very quickly if your are not careful." So to say the least I'm a little nervous to play with it. I might just buy some tunes from a good dealer and go with it. I would just like to see what is going on with my engine.
DURAtotheMAX 05-29-2009, 11:45 PM you cant do that on an LB7...theres no variable vane turbo...
Jasondt2001 05-29-2009, 11:49 PM you cant do that on an LB7...theres no variable vane turbo...
I guess I should have worded that differently...thanks Ben.

Don't worry your little heart Benny boy I just picked up a LLY/Alli Chevy CCSB, Fully Loaded, 120k miles, Straight body, 6" fab, 12k Warn for 10k Cash 3 days ago. Haven't really thought to redo my Sig. EFI Live is on the way in a week or so. It's sad but I love the fact that ppl are broke right now. It's a buyers market for sure right now. Atleast now I have a commuter truck. LOL
Deadeye 05-30-2009, 06:47 PM If any one wants an EFILive it would be best to call me about them which I have been selling for quite a while . . .
