I have a 2001GMC 2500HD. I put new rubber on last wk and thought I should ck the spare as I'm leaving foo Canada for 6wks.Never been in there since I got this truck.Opened the door on bumper and a door lock:eek: So I got out the book and it said to use the icnition key, It dosen't work, tried it many times, even tried my 95' key.it's solid no give at all. This is the only key I got. What's a guy to do? got a grand worth of rubber so most likely won't need it,but you know how that gose. That's not to mention I didn't get the handles for the jack, that's another story:mad: Any way to get it out? Anything besides a big hammer?

So no ignition switch ever been changed? If not then maybe rusted or corussion issue. Hate to say it but maybe see if dealer can get it out for free. But maybe the worst thing to do first. Have them rotate the tires and have them drop the spare while at it for you so you can get it checked out and rebalanced.

frozen from no use. the zinc latch pins "rust up" with a white powder that jams up the sliders
can of PB Blaster into the key slot and around the tapered edge and let sit for a few minutes. if you go under the bumper and see where the tube goes thru the bumper and shoot some in around the inside of the tube there will help some as well

I'll crawl under and take a look but I don't belive that's the problem. I have been wrong once or twice:D

Have other stuffto do so I try to do all at once, thanks. I will get it taken care of one way or another!!! A locksmith can make a key if I take the truck to them, can't they?

I don't think they can make a key. Maybe have a bunch of keys to try though. I would think you could get a key from GM service based on the VIN. But have to check to see if the ignition switch was changed and make sure right key is ordered. Call GM service center and see what their procedure is to get it out. They should be able to look up service records to see if they have made an ignition switch change through them.

I'm with the PB Blaster route, I bought my truck used and had to dso this, it was solid but I managed to free it and not break the key!
Cleaned it real good then filled it with teflon spray lube and never had another problem with it.
Look for mud and debris as well.

Problem fixed!!! Different lock, couldn't use GM cuts so had key maid took about 15 min. After that and could see what was up found that the inner tube and the lock tube were not together, someone when messing with it did not slide the inner tube into the lock tube so you couldn't stick the crank bar in there. After cutting and bending I got it. What a PIA for something I'll never have to use I hope. But if I hadn't fixed I'd of needed my spare for sure....What a fricken stupid way of mounting a spare,to boot with the camper on I have to use a open end wrench to turn the rod as the lug thing is to long and hits the camper when you try to turn it. Where's the old 70's type with the wing nut, much easier...

from your description, sounds like the rear bumper was changed out at some point to have the tubes not lined up properly.
good to here you got it fixed thou, Murphy will always put his hands in the mix if you didn't.
