My dad was leaving for a trip Monday and when he started his 06 D-max the CEL came on. He went over to Autozone and had them hook it up to the code reader and it said the #6 cylinder had a glow plug failure. They told him that he shouldn't drive it cuz he would only be driving on 7 cylinders and he would get bad fuel milage. Do you agree with this?

I didn't think this would be the case simply cuz from my limited understanding
all I think the glow plug does is warm the cylinder to help the motor start in cold weather and then compression takes over right?

If the glow plug doesn't warm up the cylinder will it never fire at all?

I personaly think it's ok for him to drive it, just would have to have it replaced before winter. But thought I throw a post up and get a true diesel heads input.

A friend of mine said the guy at Autozone is an idiot and shouldn't be allowed to sell parts.

Are you sure its a glow plug failure and not an injector failure?

NEVER GO TO THAT AUTOZONE AGAIN

I'm sure the idiot at AutoZone thought Diesels had spark plugs. It is perfectly fine to drive a diesel with a bad glow plug, you are correct that it only helps warm the cylinder when starting. But you should still replace the plug ASAP. $30 part and takes about 15 minutes to do. I had one go out so I replaced all of them in an hour.

Awsome, thanks! Can you reach them form the top or is it easler to go
from underneath the truck? Did you find directions anywhere how to do this?

Any help would be great.

I wasn't there but that's what my dad told me the guy said.

He's already replaced the injectors in his 03 D-Max, he's running on his 4 set right now.
If his 06 has an injector going out it he is going to have a fit!

Hell.... I'm afraid he might trade it in for a Ford!!!
