i was just at the gm ordering info sight for 2006 and they list the 6speed ally but, now increase in performance from the engine and my favorite color the dark gray or charcoal is being replaced
the 3500 even lists a ne wheel and gm now offers a new towing mirror with a lower convex glass

I am curious why they list the mirrors as being "NEW" but don't say anything about the 6 speed as being new, they list it as if it has always been available.

Now, How do we modify our 5-speeds? :)

I saw both the tranny and mirrors as being NEW on the GMC 2500HD.

A little valve body magic and a software change is all that is required for the 6 speed conversions.

BUT

The MY'06 transmissions have a higher helix angle on the geartrain to compensate for the higher speeds that the planetaries will see.

Graystone Metallic sounds like it could be a decent color option.

Little more to it than that.

From reviewing that website, looks like the 4.10 rear axle is now standard on the Heavy Duty Power Package and the 3.73 is listed as available. Will be interesting to see which axle is more popular. I think that most would still want the 3.73, but I imagine that with the 4.10 being standard, that is what will end up on most dealers lots.

i would love to find a way to convert as well. i believe it would be better fuel mileage on our trucks. may even be better to get a new 4.10 rear axle.

as far as converting goes, i don't need all the fancy shift lockout selcting. just would like the added gear. i believe it is a .61, where as the 5ht gear in our trucks is a .71.

i believe i saw a post on it and it showed the specs. will have to look for it.

So, is the 6 speed only for the 8.1 gassers?

They could use all the help they can get in the fuel mileage dept.

no six speed is for duramax and 8.1l gasser

NEW! Transmission, Allison 1000 6-speed automatic, electronically controlled with overdrive and electronic engine grade braking, includes tow/haul mode selector and (KNP) Cooling, external transmission oil cooler
1 - Requires (L18) Engine, Vortec 8100 V8 SFI or (LLY) Engine, Duramax 6600 Turbo Diesel V8.

How long before the Suncoast VI-6?

gonna be a while.. Look at the LLY's, took a while for some power to get out, and still not up to speed. Expect issues or the possibility our 5 spd's cant be upgraded. Sounds real nice, but probably not for the price of just a 6th.

Looks to me like the 4.10 will be standard with an 8.1, but not available with the lly. I can't be sure becasue if you go further into the ordering info and specs, it lists the diesel hp 250. That would be the rating for the diesel in the heavy duty vans.

The MY'06 transmissions have a higher helix angle on the geartrain to compensate for the higher speeds that the planetaries will see.I'm no expert, but that doesn't make sense. From what has been said, all the 5 speeds have the 6th gear, it's just not enabled. Why would they put it there if it couldn't be used due to the helix angle? We're not talking a HUGE difference in speed.

I thought the helically cut gears in the '06 were to reduce the gear whine that we all endure.

If u look at the trailering specs, it lists the rating for the axle ratios.

The dmax is only 3.73 and the 8.1 is 3.73 and 4.10.

I just had TranSynd installed in my 03 ally this morning at "Allison"!
I just had to ask them about the six speed "ally-1000" for 06, and they told me
the trany is actualy capable of seven speeds the way it is. Here's what they toold me! They accomplish this by changing the programing in the "TCM" to engage two of the five clutch packs at the same time, but you'll need more than stock power to run this way. They claim it will rob you of power. That's why the 06 DMAX has more hp. The shop Mgr. toold me to give him a call in about six months, to see if he will have the program to flash my "TCM". Maybe I'll go for a seven speed flash:) ?

Higher helix angle will lose a few more HP through the trans, and increase trans heat a little.

1 More Gear Would be fantastic

C2 + C4 applyed should give you your 6th gear. Planet gear angle is changed to compensate for noise and speed rating in 6th. TCM will probably be a new one as Allison wants the same TCM in all their transmissions. It is still not official untill the announcement is actually made.

Sorry guys, but no seven speeds. The C2 and C4 clutches will give you a sixth range but C2 and C5 will just lock-up the transmission.
