Anyone have any experience with toterhomes? Looking for something like the picture posted and trying to get the best deal and right motor for serious pulling and long term use. I have looked and talked to several retailers about these but still up in the air about what to run. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

300hp and up stay away from the lower power ratings, they run the alisons in most check out www.crewchief.com some decent info, lots of offshore racers use them to tow with, there is one in Oklahoma before paulsvalley for sale as well dont know the specs they were closed when I went to kick tires today. believe its called trucks unlimited.

Well we have looked at a few that were 400+ hp and were told they pull nice. Going to drive one this coming weekend that will be fully loaded with 4 race cars and equipment so we will see. It is a 455hp Renegade with 44 ft Stacker trailer. Almost like the one in the pic but truck is just a little bigger and trailer is 4 foot longer...Thanks for the website info.

good luck with it, also depending on how many people will sleep in it, you could do a class 8 conversion with a large sleeper has all the amenities and register it as a RV or personal coach. www.truckpaper.com has some large sleeper rigs.

NO no CDL is required because it is calssified as a motor home

bigtruckbigpower,

That to a degree is true, but here in PA and NY, we have been getting hammered about the fuel jugs we have been carrying in the trailers. Seems they don't like the amount of methanol we carry for a full weekend. It's a touchy situation right now. I have temporarily given up driving our rig (no CDL) until we can get it figured out.

Be aware of the following: Units grossing over 26000 rating require: 1. CDL 2. DOT number. 3. All tractor/units with 3 axles require dot number regardless of weight 4. All units used as a tractor, the initial purchaser must pay FED tax of some 10 % of price paid. 4. Units over 26000 if used out of state might require apportioned plates...fuel taxes paid to each of the states driven in. 5. If truck has holding tank unit MIGHT be able to be classed as RV if not representing a comercial enterprise (depending on your state). One other thought a couple states require a cdl if the vehicle has full air brakes. Most big motor homes have air over hydrallic.(different).

In other words buy a used unit 2 axle (non tandem), with a rated maximum gvw of 26000 (with tax already paid by original purchaser).
A new truck that is equipped as a tractor (say $95000 would require an additional $9500 paid to Uncle Sam before you could get licensed in your state).I have a similar truck as shown in the picture. I bought mine used. It has a GVW of 26000 and is licensed for 20000 lbs gross, although it can exceed that (upgrading plate) if necessary. Of couse I have to keep the gross under 26000 and state that I am not for hire.
I had the engine turned up to 300 HP 860 torque. It has 204k miles and 5600hrs on it.
I am not as of yet planning on hauling a lot of weight. The truck weighs about 12000 empty. It has a 6 speed allison with a double overdrive ( top 2 gears) 4.3 rear gear with 22.5 tiresI have gotten 10.9 mpg with a light load (about 5500 lbs) going 68 mph.

My insurance company would NOT insure the truck if it had a tandem.
I have to go through scales and was hasseled in New Mexico.
I hope this helps.

the roblem is that it is registered as a tractor not an rv. goto www.escapees.com for more info on the class 8 registrations.

As for the extra fuel, could you add an extra saddle tank to the frame or behind the cab/sleeper then carry a portable pump and leave the jugs empty, no tthe first time I heard about to much fuel in the trailer issue with racers.

I do know that in OK you can get them registered as the same as a personal pickup if you have the required items on the inside.

a 55 gallon drum is a legal way of carrying that much fuel....even in the pain in the a&& state of NY. I used to deal with the same thing running race cars living in NY.

as for the registration... these things are always debateable. It would be in your interest to ensure it stays personal and be marked as such. In Michigan the weight police are after anyone that even "looks" commercial.

good luck

I can comment a lot further on this subject, especially in PA/NY/MJ/DE but I think I am going to hold my comments for a few days and let my blood pressure go down!

GMC,

By the look of the picture, that is the Renegade rig, correct?

Did you get a chance to test drive one over the weekend and what did you think of it?

Before I give you some comments, what are you planning to haul with the rig and what are your plans for use, just one night at a time or on the road for a week or a month at a time?? It will help me formulate my comments for you and what we have been dealing with.

Well yes, it is a Renegade. I have not had a chance to drive it yet, guy was not able to make it into town in his rig. I am going to be hauling 4 race cars, SCCA and CT series type cars. We will be on the road for a week or more at a time. What have you been dealing with regarding this? I am interested to know.. Thanks

there are a couple used ones for sale at www.centralrvcenter.com

What type of dealings have you had with them in those states, I do know that the class 8 conversions are harder to tag as an rv there, what else? Also interested thanks..

I have a 2005 United toter with a 2005 Volvo 475 HP Cummins and 12 speed auto trans with no clutch pedal that is for sale and can be seen at www.dealsonwheels.com (http://www.dealsonwheels.com/). It is a 17' conversion with a LOADED interior. In-motion sat, dvd, vcr, ducted heat and air, surround sound, conv. micro,8 cu. fridge, leather walls,13' slideout,8 KW gen, outside stereo system and much more. You do not need a CDL,fuel permit or commercial licence. We pull a 44' stacker trailer like you show in the photo with no problem. This truck rides fantastic and handles the wind great.

I was tired of spending $50,000+ for a pickup and having no power or carrying cap. Also resale on these is real good providing you buy one with good power and an auto trans.

E-mail me at dave851w@yahoo.com if you have any ?'s or just want some photos.

Thanks,
Dave

i am just going to throw out a few pieces of info i know tx is diff than pa but in pa anything over 26000 needs to say "not for hire" or it can be considered comercial. also in ths state of pa there is a non comercial class A & B license. class B is described as single over 26k with a tow of no more than 10k, class A is single/combination over 26k with a trailer over 10k.

Well the trailer sold, so now we are still in the looking phase.. Have some ideas and talking to a few retailers but nothing solid yet. Will post pics when we finalize things.. Looking at the Renegade line of trucks and trailers. Time will tell... Have to decide how serious we are going to be with this and if it will be long term...
