: Radiator Hose Life
DmaxCC6spd 05-21-2009, 11:39 AM I have an '01 with 55K miles. The truck is being promoted for fifthwheel towing duty after its easy first 7 years of life. I am trying to decide if I should be worried about losing a radiator hose while traveling. None of the local auto parts stores stock the hose and the lower lists for over $200 at the dealer. Should I be concerned? Should I take spare hoses or just not worry about it.
Thoughts?
thefermanator 05-21-2009, 12:29 PM I always figure 7 years to be the life of a radiator hose under the best of conditions. Even the slightest oil leak on them for any length of time though will drastically shorten that time considerably. I bought mine from CARQUEST for $60 and $12.
oldred95 05-22-2009, 08:38 PM As near as I can tell (the faded GM lettering) the hoses on my 95 are original with only 195,000 miles on them. Still pliable as ever and in good condition. I have no intentions of changing them either. If it was me I wouldn't change them unless they've been soaked in oil like mentioned.
Brad92 05-22-2009, 09:39 PM if it ain't broke, don't fix it. as long as there aren't soft spots, chafing, or cracks, i wouldn't replace it.
DURAtotheMAX 05-23-2009, 11:48 AM its fine IMO...
kcb37 05-24-2009, 06:49 AM I would agree with Brad92, however it's not a bad idea to check them every once in a while.
On the other hand if you can get them from a parts store for 70 80 dollars like thefermanator did, then you have brand new hoses and nothing to worry about.
Kinda one of those things spend a little money for the piece of mind in knowing it's harder for you to get stuck on the side of the road.
DURAtotheMAX 05-24-2009, 10:29 AM The factory duramax radiator hoses are a lot more expensive than 65 dollars, I can tell you that right now...

The dealer was outrageous, but CARQUEST was pretty reasoneable. $67.70 for the lower, and $13.91 for the upper.
DURAtotheMAX 05-25-2009, 12:00 AM for the big complicated duramax lower rad hose? Hmmm odd...I checked advance auto and it was close to 200 dollars.
wreedLBZ 05-25-2009, 12:43 AM why is the lower hose complicated?
DURAtotheMAX 05-25-2009, 11:16 AM cause it has that T intersection thing with a third hose on it, and is long and big I guess?
Ill double check advance auto again..
DURAtotheMAX 05-25-2009, 11:24 AM nvmind, I was off a bit, sorry guys. :o:
seems like its 110 for the lower one, like 20 for the upper one..at least at o'reilly's/advance
badassbronco69 05-25-2009, 12:40 PM 212000 km on mine I check em before longer trips. they are still looking good no oil on em as of yet.

Yeah, that's about what I paid for mine at Napa. My current ones don't look to bad but we're about to tow the fifth wheel to Florida for some camping so I'm having the system flushed and hoses replaced... for peace of mind.
