: Tranny issues?
buckshot1224 05-20-2009, 09:50 AM I put this in drivetrain but should have probably put it here.
Recently my truck has been acting a little odd. Coming down the interstate the other day pulling my 18' aluminum boat my truck wouldn't shift correctly. Whenever it would try to pull a hill it would shift out of overdrive, the RPMs would come up but it wouldn't go. It felt as though the truck wasn't going into gear. I could hear something cutting on like a fan or something but I'm not familiar enough with the whole drivetrain deal to understand it all.
I checked the fluid and it may have been a little low but I didn't think it was enogh to matter. I added about a half of quart of trans oil to it and it hasn't done this since. However I haven't been pulling anything either.
BUT recently I've also noticed that if I get on the throttle hard, when the truck goes to shift from 1st to 2nd it seems little it gets stuck between gears. It will pick up RPMS and a light grey smoke will come out the tail pipe. This is the only time I ever see this, otherwise it is usually black. If I come of the throttle and get back on it a little lighter it will act fine.
Any idea what is going on? I don't think this is normal...............
JC1843 05-20-2009, 10:31 AM One of the easiest tranny fixes is ------- "Replace the Fuel Filter"!
Sounds like yours is restricted.
buckshot1224 05-20-2009, 10:54 AM really...........fuel filter will cause this.
I never would think that the way it pour out the smoke when it wants to.
Is there anything else it could be?
02B12S 05-20-2009, 02:01 PM Yes, try the fuel filter first.
JJ
buckshot1224 05-22-2009, 07:02 PM fuel filter doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.............
Any other ideas before it goes to the stealership? Could it be injectors? Tranny?
Diesel Tech 05-22-2009, 09:02 PM Change the spin on filter on the transmission. If it is plugging up it can cause shifting issue. Save the old filter and cut it open to see what inside if it solves your issue. If it's got a bunch of clutch material in it start saving for a transmission rebuild as you will be needing one sooner than later.
wreedLBZ 05-22-2009, 09:34 PM Let us know what you find out, I am curious
buckshot1224 05-22-2009, 10:24 PM I just replaced the spin off filter about 1K ago and it looked good. The truck has 101K on it. I'm a little nervous about what exactly it is. I've got an extended engine and drivetrain warranty and a good dealership that will work with me. I just hate to give up the truck for a couple of days...........and I hate to take it up there and it be something that isn't under warranty..............
buckshot1224 05-22-2009, 10:47 PM Also, I'm learning a lot so you'll have to excuse some of the ignorance...........what/where is the intercooler and could it have anything to do with the noise I'm hearing? What does it do?
wreedLBZ 05-22-2009, 11:05 PM The intercooler is what cools the air charge to the turbo i believe
wreedLBZ 05-22-2009, 11:06 PM I
wreedLBZ 05-22-2009, 11:07 PM It looks like and it mounted by the engine coolant radiator
buckshot1224 05-22-2009, 11:18 PM got ya.......
I'm still trying to figure out what the load sound I hear cutting on is. It sounds like a fan but I can hear it load and clearly over everything else when it cuts on.
IOWA LLY 05-23-2009, 05:34 PM It probably is the fan.... Change your spin-on again and see if that fixes the issue. If you have a problem with your tranny it could have gotten plugged in the 1k miles quite easily.
buckshot1224 05-26-2009, 02:23 PM Changed out the spin off and haven't really tested it out yet but the filter looked like it was ok. The fluid looked a little dark but not too bad. I think I'm going to run it by the dealership and have them flush it out and see what they say. I've got the tranny covered under warranty so I just want to see if that is the problem for right now.
Diesel Tech 05-26-2009, 08:29 PM Take the filter and find a way to cut it open, that will let you see if there is anything in the paper inside.
buckshot1224 05-26-2009, 10:25 PM I may do that tomorrow tech.............
I ran it hard on the way home today and it wasn't too happy when I got home. I drive about 65 miles of interstate every day. On the way home today I opened it up to about 85mph and tried to keep it there. It seemed fine until I backed of and then tried to bring the speed back up. At one point I never could get pat about 78mph. When I got off the interstate and got on the highway, it didn't want to go through the gears. I could here the loud noise again (fan I guess) and it seemed like the more throttle the less responsive it was. I'll see if I can dig into it tomorrow but I think I'm about set on letting the dealership get a hold of it soon.
I'm starting to sweat a little though because even if it is covered under warranty, I still hate to go through it all..........
buckshot1224 05-27-2009, 10:05 AM I just got off the phone with a diesel tech at the dealership and he seemed almost convinced I've got water in the injectors again.............
He said he has 2 in the shop right now that have the same issue and both have water in them. My question is, is there anything I can do to try to correct this on my own or is it out of my range? Any additives I can run through to try to get iwater out of the injectors if that is the problem?
BudTX 05-27-2009, 10:23 AM "Water in the injectors" can be from bad fuel or a headgasket.
Open the petcock at the bottom of the WIF sensor on the fuel filter. Any water in there? A fuel filter change and a tank of fresh diesel will help, purchased from a high volume station. Quality additives can help as well, if you don't have too much water in your tank.
Check the oil and see if the fluid on the dipstick looks milky. Grab the top radiator hose to see if it feels hard. If so, you might want to have the headgasket checked.
buckshot1224 05-27-2009, 11:05 AM motor oil is fine........just serviced it this weekend
change fuel filter then also and didn't see much water residue
One question.................Could the loud noise I'm hearing be the tourque (sp?) convertor trying to engage? Cause when I let off the throttle and ease into it the noise usually goes away and the truck will take off like it should.
