I just got my first Onstar vehicle diagnostic report since installing my Banks 6-gun and it says that it cannot get any information from my truck. It states that the problem is probably because I have an aftermarket device plugged in to the vehicle diagnostic port. Since they obviously know that there is an aftermarket device installed, can they try to void my warranty? I bought the Banks because it was supposedly "undetectable" by the manufacturer, but they can "see" that something is on there without even getting hold of my truck.

I get the same thing every month. If you call OnStar they do the diagnostic real-time and it works.

My report from OnStar says the same thing. I have an Edge Race.

no. you are fine and your warranty is not going anywhere.
anyone who tells you otherwise is just being stupid and paranoid. :)

Anything plugged in at the time will do that. My DashHawk does it too and is always plugged in - some months I get a full report anyways - maybe because it was running at the time big brother looked. I know last month I left my PC and was sitting in the truck with the key on, not running setting displays on the DashHawk. Went back to my PC and the full report had just arrived - so having the key on is enough.
It does show oil life still either way:
THIS MONTH RECIEVED YESTERDAY:
Diagnostic: We were unable to successfully complete a diagnostic test. This issue may be caused by an aftermarket device plugged into your vehicle's diagnostic port.
Remaining Oil Life: 12%
Mileage: 22,742
Schedule a service visit soon with your GM dealer.
Based on oil life and mileage readings, next required maintenance estimated at 24,000 miles.
LAST MONTH:
Diagnostic: Complete. No action needed.
Remaining Oil Life: 24%
Mileage: 21,534
No required maintenance due at this time.
Based on oil life and mileage readings, next required maintenance estimated at 24,100 miles.

Seems it's just the new GM trucks with GMLAN. My 2005 didn't do this.

This will happen with any kind of monitor that plugs into the CAN bus. The trucks OBD system has to set a priority for system diagnosis. Because you have a monitor that pluggs into CAN it has priority. The monitor you have plugged into the truck is looked at as a scantool and has priority over OnStar. This is the same situation that you will see if you plug in two monitors into the same truck. One will monitor correctly while the other won't read anything.

My report is the same. Does the onstar crash feature work with something plugged in?

I would call and ask them that. That is a good thing to have in case of a serious accident.

I doubt that whoever I would talk to would know.

hmmm...thats a million dollar question that I think would be quite hard to get the answer of... :(
IF I had to give my best educated guess, I would say no, the onstar crash notification would still work fine. Because when you are in a crash and an airbag deployment is commanded, the SDM (airbag computer) sends a data signal to the VCIM (onstar box) that says "send out an SOS!!"; it doesnt involve any data exchange/communication with the ECM. WHereas the onstar diagnostics thing, the VCIM is directly asking the ECM for something....but your aftermarket monitor thing is already talking to the ECM...so it gets confused.
your aftermarket thing isnt talking to either the SDM or the VCIM, to theoretically, the onstar crash notification should still work fine with it plugged in.
if that makes sense.......

have same problem called tech service at on star he was able to get reading then with banks installed in truck. I asked why the e-mail says no information.. he was realy smart (I Think) he told me that what happens is that a night the system sends out information requests for each truck. in a batch. if by chance your tuck can't get good signal from the sat you get this error has nothing to do with aftermarket device on star can't see that. only dealer when the plug in type II.
