New member. Currently home on leave and looking at Duramax trucks. I would like to buy a used one when I get home mid summer. Going to have to buy used. I think that I would like a GMC standard cab, long bed, automatic, 4X4, 2500. I am a gear head but new to the diesel game. I will need help picking tuners, exhaust, and everything else. To start with though, are there any special considerations to review before buying a Duramax?

Special consideration #1 - be prepared to spend A LOT more than you are planning on. There are a lot, too many? cool things you can buy for these trucks. :D

have one of the techs here run the VIN # to look at the history.

if you can get a 4 oz sample of engine oil from the truck you are considering, send it into the lab for analysis. $20 can tell you whether the engine has been taken care of or not. i used blackstone labs. i think they can do a pretty quick turnaround.

next thing... if you can find one that already has bilstein shocks on it... then great.. if not, consider getting them right away. that was the best 250 i spent on my truck.

welcome aboard....

Are you serving overseas? If you are look into military overseas car sales. With thier price and the lower intrest rate you get on new vs used you may be able to afford a new one easier than you think.

I am currently home on leave from Afghanistan. All we have available are Fords and Harleys. Thank you all for your replies. If possible, I will keep the questions coming when I get back in country.

I also want to thank you for your service. Personally, I think anyone who has had to spend time in Afganistan (or Iraq or any other Mideast hole) should be given a new truck.
