The dealer told me this morning that I have a vacuum leak. Engine idling about 1600 RPM. It's a 454 gasser.
They did not have time to look for it now. How do you find a vacuum leak?
Is there a "good way" or do it by process of elimination?
As always your help is appreciated.

To idle that fast, it shouldn't be hard to find. Does it have a vacuum brake booster? If so, pull the hose going into it and hold your finger over the hole. If the engine slows way down, that's it. I can't believe an intake gasket could be leaking bad enough to do that. If you can't find it easily, use spray carb cleaner and when you find it, the engine will speed up. Is it carbureted? If so, check the thick gasket under the carb. Also, you can pull other vacuum hoses off the intake and plug the port they came from to see if that is where it's getting its air. If all else fails, pull the carb or throttle plate to check that the plate is closing all the way and isn't damaged. I had a backfire once that blew part of the primary butterflies off. It would do 65 mph with no throttle!

Marc,
Thanks for the info.
I'll start my search in the morning and let you know what I find.
