Been reading alot about fuel filters and trucks going into limp mode and was wondering how often they should be changed to avoid this? I would hate to set out with the fifth wheel and have this happen.

The need to change fuel filters is driven exclusively by the quality of the fuel that you are running through it. If you avoid cut-rate stations, mass produced bio-diesel, and be careful not to introduce contaminates while refueling, you should not have to change filters more often than once every 15 to 20 thousand miles. I have more than 20,000 miles since my last filter change and the truck is running great. When the DIC got down to 10% filter life left, I just re-set the DIC without changing the filter and kept driving. No problems and no power lost. Others will undoubtedly disagree with me but the bottom line is if your truck is running great without changing the filter, why mess with it?

While I do agree with fuel quality driving filter life, I do not agree with resetting the DIC without changing your fuel filter because you notice nothing wrong or out of the ordinary, also I will add that your truck will continue to run great and seem normal without changing the oil... Fuel filters are cheap maintenance so why not just change it? As always though it's your truck and you have the right to do with it as you see fit.

If you have not already added a pre filter,it is a very good idea to do so.they are cheap, around a 100 dollars.with the diesel engine clean fuel is very important, when changing the pre filter it takes like five minutes, changing the oem filter is a pain in the a$$

I would first look at the Nicktane, and John Kennedy sells a set up. There are a few ways to go. I have a pre-filter and still change both out every summer, and the pre-filter I also change out mid winter. Never had a filter clogged up and hope to keep it that way. I do keep a spare for each under the back seat.

I would definitely go with the nicktane or kennedy setup as a primary filter. I change mine at 10K miles and every time I cut it open it is absolutely black...dirty. I change the stock filter at 20K miles. I always fill at high volume stations or truck stops too.
