: Fuel Mileage Towing
DMAXYUKON 04-27-2005, 01:29 PM I just returned from a holiday towing my Travel Trailer to Southern California back up to the Yukon. Overall wieght was 15500lbs truck and trailer.
Overall mileage was 13.69 Imperial Gallons Per Mile. (Canadian MPG).
I am very happy with this. Edge set on Level 2 the whole time. NO Exhaust or intake yet.:ro)
that's just under 11 us mpg. Thats about what I get towing similar weight up to Sierras from SoCal. Way better than my previous gasser (8 if I was lucky and way slower uphill)
DMAXYUKON 04-27-2005, 02:53 PM If I calculated it right it is 11.39 US MPG.
millertime_t1 04-27-2005, 09:15 PM regular cab 05 duramax 4x4 3500 single rear wheel pulling 14,600 lbs on a 7,200lbs. trailer pulling with a 7,000 lbs truck on slightly rolling terrain indiana -illinois- iowa for a 780 mile trip my average was 8.4 U.S. miles per gallon----with an allison
my 12valve cummins 5spd regular cab 4x4 weighing 400lbs. more (its a dually)
gets right @ 10.5 miles per gallon pulling same weight.
mileage is my biggest complaint with the GM so far because i do pull alot of weight long distances.
It may be just cause its an auto --- Wish I could have worked both before deciding rather to go auto or stick
We also run a ford it also does better than gm but not the dodge----ford is a 6peed
I dont personally drive the ford so cant give exact figures---- but it is a regular cab 4x4 srw also----hope this helps
these are totally unbiased figures - as you see i own all three
Hope this helps anybody concerned with towing mileage.
cowdoc 04-28-2005, 09:04 AM Milertime,
You have all three. Which pulls the best?

How fast were you towing & how many miles on your truck?
Gray Max 04-28-2005, 04:41 PM New trailer weighs 7,000# empty and can get 12 empty if I'm careful. Hauling 9,000# load weight get from 6 to 8 depending on hills. My 03 6 speed never dropped below 10 mpg even with 12,000# load weigh in Tenn. If GM did not detune the 6 speed I would have gone that route with a solid flywheel and clutch from Craig. LLY also runs much hotter.. around 1300 on hard pulls.
dentman4054 04-28-2005, 06:54 PM id like to see what he says about which onetows the best
JohnnyO 04-28-2005, 08:52 PM getting between 11.5 to 12 mpg towing 10K.
csmartindale 04-28-2005, 09:28 PM Michigan to Florida and back with 9,500# 5er at 65-70mph. Best was 12.4 going 65 through Ohio, and worst was 10.1 going 70 through Kentucky. I'm very satisfied.
millertime_t1 05-01-2005, 04:04 PM As far as pulling power -- The dodge is just absolutely almost unstoppable--Once the turbo starts to spool up on the d-max it also seems unstoppable --- the ford really lacks alot it seems to have atleast 20% less power than d-max or cummins ---remember though it is a 7.3 -not the 6.0 i have never driven the 6.0 ford--Im not saying the ford is a slacker but i definately prefer the gm and dodge
Slickduster 05-01-2005, 04:13 PM I just got my New DMAX, on tuesday, my question is how do you post a thread on the Diesel Page Website.

millertime_t1 05-01-2005, 04:21 PM I now have almost 14k miles on the gm and have completed another trip (same as discussed before with the same weight) happy to see i am gettin better fuel economy--i got almost 10 mile per gallon and for the question about my speed it ranges anywhere from 60-70 depending highway or interstate rarely ever over 70 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition on wich one pulls better i answered the power question, but as far as actually handling the load 1- dodge (its a dually & it should) 2- gm its a 3500 truck handles weight exceptionally well but could use some stiffer tires or dually rear end not that i would do that--3-ford it is only an f-250 and is lacking in spring capacity
All three trucks will more than handle what they are designed to pull and do it well-but we push the limits of gvwr's---- i still would like to see my duramax with a solid front axle and a gear ratio somewhere between 4.10 & 4.56

8000+ mile trip 13.9 MPG with 80+% towing 5000lb Travel trailer. Typically get 13MPG or more going 55-60MPH towing. Best was entire tank at 60MPH with tail wind and 80 dgree temp on flat West Texas/ New Mexico at 14.5 MPG. My DCI is accurate to within .05 MPG as tested over 1500 mile return trip. Did get .7MPG variation on one tank. Head wind will kill mileage by as much as 2 MPG Worse was 10MPG at 67-70 with head wind. Winter fuel cuts by about 1 MPG. Cold engine/cold air harms MPG also. Speed over 65 MPH does you in also(needs another OD gear). Any stopping or stop/go traffic ruins mileage quickly. Did similar trip in 1500 5.7 L gas truck last year and got around 7MPG so very happy.
LLYDISGUSTED 05-03-2005, 12:05 PM Just Bought 05 Duramax, And I Can't Get Any Better Than 11.0 Mpg When Empty. I Had 03 Lb7 And Got 15.1 Mpg, I Got The Shaft! Should've Kept The 03!!!!

T172JR 05-03-2005, 03:55 PM Tow 10,000 lb race car trailer every week, going 70 with cruise 12 mpg,if you stay 65 and under it will be better.I have found that they are a liitle like a gas motor.Take it easy and you get better mileage, throttle it and it pulls like crazy but mileage goes down. GMC 04.5 ext cab dually towing 26 ft enclosed trailer race car, gen , pit bike fuel, etc , etc....best truck i've ever had!!
