: wife said yes to truck upgrades, need help

The wife said yes to me drag racing the truck (she's the one who makes the money). I need info on how to make this LLY rock. Funds are not unlimited. I'm talking with the experts on trans/conv. upgrades. Tie rod sleeves are on the way. I have stock exhaust without cat and will most likely straight pipe it. I have a predator and swiss cheesed the air box.

I know I won't be the fastest truck around, being it's a LLY, but would like to run respectable times at the track.

Looking for most bang for the buck. Propane, N2O, tunes?

Diesel truck race on May 22nd. Testing next week if possible.

Help me :grd:

Thanks,
Rob

Limited funds brings up the question: How limited? $3k+ for transmission to cross 400RWHP, OR you can put a nice box on it and enjoy it at mid 300's RWHP...

Already have a Predator running 85/100 hp settings, but would like to step it up.

Going to do the trans/converter myself, and will listen to the experts on what is needed, most likely triple disc and a kit of some sort. Hopefully will have another $1000.00/$1500.00 to play with after trans work.

Do the trans once, and do it right. Don't skimp. It will be your #1 hurdle to good ET's.

You're going to need a lift pump, no matter what anyone says. Trust me. Carter is loud, but cheap and effective.

If I was going budget LLY for racing:

Cheap 4" straight pipe.
Suncoast or ATS trans. (I won't get into a pissing contest) I'm adding a CoPilot to my Suncoast to make shifting more repeatable.
Triple disc convertor.
Predator or PPE + Van Aaken box.
Carter pump.
Dry nitrous kit. Mine cost $300 to build.
Tierod sleeves.

This should get you into the low 13's at a sea level track. With some weight reduction, 12's.

Twins would be nice if fuel was available for the LLY's. And unfortunately my wife hasn't totally lost touch with reality:( . What about using the predator w/propane and N2O? Does propane help the fuel shortage with the LLYs?

Propane can certainly be used. So far though, I have not been that impressed with gain you get after running big tuners and nos. Seems the tuners and nos eat into the gain the propane would provide. But you will still gain ~30-40rwhp.

Funny after going to Moroso & watching the drags. She said it was ok for me to race ours. SHE wants to race Tony's Camaro!
On edit: she wants me to buy his Camaro so she can drive it

Mild tunes and propane are the best compliment to each other. You can get close to the maximum driveable power out of both that way, without having to beef up a lot of other components.
Gains
VA/High/propane 373.4/418.5 45.1
Predator High/propane 398.6/451.2 52.6

stock LLY/propane 242.9/305.0 62.1

If you intend to use the truck for anything other than drag racing, then propane is a more versatille and economic power enhancer than nitrous. Or you could do both:ro)

Good idea Gary. I've been a stay at home dad for the last two years with toddlers. I think she is feeling sorry for me. On second thought, I hope she doesn't think I'm losing my manliness:eek: and she thinks racing will get it back. Guess I'd better stop clipping coupons and watching General Hospital. Sorry, got to go dust now and then serve dinner.

Oh yeah, powershotone, that predator w/ propane on a LLY is 451 HP? If true sounds like a good everyday mix for shopping/pta meetings. I'll then add N2O at the track. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
a kept man

You guys are not far off. The little ones have been a little bored with the predator themselves. From the back comes "faster, faster, Daddy make the tires squeal again" and from the front "o.k. just don't tell Mommy" They both went to the drags with me last Sunday. They both had a ball, and they went wild when a vette did a three foot high wheel stand.:ro) They can't wait to watch Dad race the truck.

Thanks for the ideas,
Rob

The car is SAFE for anyone! Goes straight as an arrow.....anywhere!
It hooks up better than my truck in 4WD!:D
