: Need some info please
Tahoe Joe 04-27-2005, 12:01 PM I just acquired a 6.2 that I am going to put in my project truck, a 1976 Jeep pickup. I can't find an EGR valve anywhere on the motor, so I am assuming that I have the preferable J intake? How can you tell the difference between a C and a J motor? I also noticed a casting number of 9-82 behind the right cylinder head; does this mean that this engine was made in September of 1982?
Also, a friend has a 6.2, not sure of what year it is, and he has 2 fuel filters on his, whereas mine only has the one that would go on the firewall and not the second one that goes under the intake. Any thoughts on this? I also noticed that the marks on the injection pump and front cover do not line up...is this an indication of "turning up the fuel" as they say?
Thanks for any and all help...I'm kinda new to diesels!
Deadeye 04-27-2005, 12:39 PM I can't answer your question since my 6.2 has been gone for 13+years. One thing I do remember, get an intercooler for it (assume it has a turbo?). The steel/iron heads get hot and takes a long time to cool down. Esp with a turbo it will heat up more. Also, get a bigger radiator.
good luck.
Tahoe Joe 04-27-2005, 01:29 PM No turbo on this yet, but I do have plans for one in the future!

EGR will be inside the air filter cannister, rubber hose going to it, if there's nothing there then you don't have one.
Your lookin at timing marks, it means the inj pump has been advanced to compensate for timing chain slack.
Tahoe Joe 04-28-2005, 04:42 AM Thank you for the help. So what can I do to get some more power out of this? How can I indentify this engine as to what year it is? Also, I'm still puzzled about the fuel system. I have looked at three other 6.2's and they all have a filter under the intake, and mine doesn't and doesn't appear to have any provision for it whatsoever.
D.Camilleri 04-28-2005, 01:27 PM What year truck did the engine come out of? 82-83 trucks had two spin on filters. Primary water fuel separator on fire wall and seconday filter on rear of intake. Later versions only have one box style filter on firewall. What color is the engine? Red signifies 1st year production and coarse thread injectors, black indicates all other years and fine thread injectors. More power is free flow exhaust, turn up fuel, open up air. Lot's more power = turbo. For an application in a jeep, get the biggest radiator you can find or you won't be able to keep it cool, and use a mechanical fan with possible electric in front of radiator to help when going slow.:grd:
Tahoe Joe 04-29-2005, 02:31 AM Thanks for the info. The engine is black, but I am not sure about the fine/course threads on the injectors. Would it be a good idea BEFORE the engine is installed to replace the timing gears and chain? Just a thought. Also, I have heard that once you disturb the valve train on a 6.2, you must bleed down the lifters and then pump them up with either clean diesel or kerosene. Has anyone heard of this? Thanks...
D.Camilleri 04-29-2005, 12:50 PM Tahoe Joe, that is a wives tale. Lifters are hydraulic rollers and pump themselves up just fine. Timing chain replacement is over rated, these double roller chains stretch fairly quickly and then stay put. New chain spec is .500 play and used is .750. I have never seen one fail and I have checked quite a few after replacing them and they looked almost as bad as the one that was replaced after 20,000 miles. Save your money. If your engine is black it will have fine thread injectors. Probably an 83 vintage, Good block, lots of nickel.
TFLundyB275 05-01-2005, 12:34 AM 1983 blocks had high nickle content as well? I thought only 82 red blocks had it. Just wondering. What year did they lessen the content?
Also, since you were just talking about timing chains...what about the dual idler gears for the 6.2? Good/bad/waste of money? I dont know a thing about them.
D.Camilleri 05-01-2005, 01:46 PM I can only tell you about the ones that I have torn down. Numerous 82 and 83 engines that I tore down still had honing marks on the cylinder walls at 200k, come to think of it, tore down an 84 at 150k and it was pristine also. I have also been cursed by a few machinists as boring these blocks is very hard on their equipment.:cool2:
