My wait to start light doesnt stay on any longer in winter then what it does in summer. What could this be from? truck wont ever start in winter.

Sounds like you have a bad glow plug controller

x2

on a 0* day it should take about 7-10 seconds for the light to turn off
on a 80* day it should take 4 at most

Thats what i've found on my truck

The ECM controls glow plug time. From about 70 degrees and down many of the ECM calibrations use 8-10 seconds of glow time, but the light will not illuminate for all of it. About the only thing that would cause a problem with glow times is the coolant temp sensor malfunctioning.

I changed my glow plugs and checked my glow plug controller. Glow plug controller was fine. Where is the coolant temp sensor? My engine temp. readings are usually normal, would that have anything to do with the coolant temp. sensor?

The coolant tepm sensor provides the engine temp for the ECM, TCM, AND the guage in the cluster. I know the DMAX uses rapid heating glow plugs so glow times don't need to be that long on em. A standard glow plug draws roughly 8-9 amps for the ones I have tested, an LB7 DMAX plug uses almost 14 amps. So they heat pretty quickly. Also remember that just because the light goes out doesn't mean the glow plugs stop. The ECM will keep the plugs on after start-up and only cuts em off during cranking.

the new dmaxs use the rapid heat glow plugs, we're(lb7's) are stuck with the slow stlye plugs. The new ones are on for a max of 3 seconds.

Question,.... WHO REALLY uses the wait to start feature?

I never have and it starts fine, cold, hot or in between.

The glow plugs stay on during cranking, im 99% sure on the LB7's and 100% sure on the LLY's

Mine I know cut off during cranking, but it may have been due to low voltage from just one battery being used.

I think they stay on during cranking to keep the temp up in the chamber for a faster start, only makes sense. And I know for a Fact that the Wait to Start light and the Glow Plugs do not shut off at the same time, I have tested the voltage going to the plugs in relation to the light for my remote start system.
