I am pretty certain I am going to be doing a Suncoast Level 3 in the first few weeks of May. I am in the middle of nowhere so I need to get my shopping list together asap. Once I am into this I need to have all the parts and tools required because it will take several days to get parts.

What will I need beside basic shop tools? I'm looking for A-Z list minus the standard shop tools.

Here are some basic things I have thought of:
Trans jack
Engine Stand
Need to fab bracket for engine stand
Trans fluid, Thinking of Mobil 1? QTY? 20 qts?
Gasket for between Trans and Transfer case? Part #?
Spin on filter

I already have Transgo book and allison book.

I know I am missing a lot of things so hopefully you guys can help me out.

Thanks :ro)

Might as well put on a deep pan and new deep pan internal filter as well.

As if I need to tell you, the deep pans require a different internal filter. I like my PML pan for what it's worth.

You won't be disappointed with a Suncoast 3!

Rum.

TTS converter.

More Rum.

Something to reset the taps.

Just a little more Rum.

ATS Co-Pilot. :D

With all that rum you'll need a really comfy roller to pass out on!

I needed, in addition to your list, several snap ring pliars and something to give you some compression when working the C2's (I think it was C2's); ideally about 4 1/2 inches in diameter or so. Neither of these were in my "standard shop tools"; they may be in yours.

Most important thing to me was having Eric and Mike's cell numbers, knowing I could lean on them if I ran into trouble!

With deep Allison pan, I used 21 quarts of Mobil 1, IIRC. Plus two more for the transfer case; figured I might as well service it while I had it out.

Oh, and Miller Lite rather than rum was my choice!

Thanks guys. Anything else?

I prefer Rum, but I think I will wait until after. I won't be on a creaper so I'd hate to pass out standing up under the hoist. :D

Don I need the gasket between the trans and the xfer case? Hopefully I can have one here for Friday.

Yes you should have the gasket. My local dealer had one in stock. Out side of everyday tools, I needed good snap ring pliers, torque wrench, something to compress the clutch pack(already mentioned), I think a piece of pvc pipe might work.

I didn't use a stand, just used the floor( stood it on end) and worked fine, if you haven't built the bracket yet.

When putting the C4's back in make sure the split ring is installed right, or your clearence will be incorrect. Watch the bearings, and spacer with the oil grooves. Call Eric if in doubt.

Locktite for the converter bolts.
Long extention helps with the converter bolts and upper trans bolts.
Five gallons of fluid
RTV
Trans gel or vasilene

Have fun, and take your time.

I really liked having my engin stand trans adapter deal. I also took an old radiator and laid it on my work bench. Worked nice, kept stuff from sitting in old ATF and such.

A way to squash the rotating drum!!!!!
Mike L.s number.
A FRIEND durring the R&R!!!!! No sense getting squashed with a 350# trany. At least have someone there to call 911.
A bunch of brake cleaner.
I personaly like having laytex gloves. Go from nasty hands to clean instantly.
Long extension to get them top bolts

Drain the transfer case befre hand. Much easier than trying to keep it from puking and you should drain it anyway IMO.

What is RTV?

Thanks for the reminder about the loctite. I would have forgot.

Can someone PM me Mike L's # in case I can't get ahold of Eric?

How long extension? 3'? 4'?

What size of wrench do I need to turn the crank? Flat wrench?

Does anyone have a picture of the clutch pack compresser?

What do I need to squash the rotating drum?

I have the Allison and Transgo books as well. I've read them a bit but its hard to put it altogether until you get into it.

Anyone who has done one before want to come up here and help me?

I only have a 1/2" snap on torque wrench. Should I be buying a smaller one?

The torque wrench should be fine. The rotating drum is what I described as clutch pack, the C2/C1's are in there. You need to compress it to remove a snap ring, I think it it's around 3" to 3-1/2". I didn't have anything and just did some getto clamping, but would have something on hand to do it right. Give Eric a call. RTV is a gasket sealer to put on the inside bolt heads in the bell housing, I think the ones that mount the pump(mentions it in the transgo book).

I had a bunch of extentions put together, but think three foot would be plenty.

I turned over the engine with a screwdriver on the flexplate, somewhat slow, but worked well for me. I've only done the one trans, so I'm sure there are easier ways.

I'm pretty busy through July and August so I will tackle it this weekend. Hopefully it will go smoothly.

Thank you for the offer. Who knows, I might take you up on it if things go bad.

Hi Max, you should get a new t/case gasket in the box that your stage 3 kit comes in, I did. The RTV is to put on the inside flange of the bolt head that is used to bolt the tork conv housing to the case. We have had some come in at work that are leaking from the bottom bolts inside the bellhousing. The bulletin released by GM said to install copper washers onto the bottom bolts, but the RTV sealer will work just fine. The rotating drum has to be disassembled during the upgrade, so you will need a way to compress the pistons to remove snap rings as stated earlier. Make sure that you have some stout snap ring pliers that spread wide. Just go slow and read you books and all should go well, good luck. Kelly.

Oh, a variety of larger picks and smaller prying/picking tools will help. I hate using screw drivers but those will work if needed
