Ok so history first...
bought my 02 and wore out the 254 firestone POS's in 10K. Bought some 285/75/16 BFG T/A's and loved them. Put about 16K on them and had to defective ones... errr... that the tire store couldn't balance so 'they' bought me two new ones care of my warranty. Ok so a few years pass I buy my 04 and have the dealer put my 02 rims and BFGs on my 04 and put the POS 04 tires on my 02 when I traded it in. Now I'm at 27K on my truck, that's about 44K on two of the BFGs and they are about done. Yesterday found screw in one rear. Took them down to Discount and told them what the hey lets buy two. The guy says that to him it looks like the back two just wore out faster than the front and he'd warranty them. I said sounds good to me. Left truck to get two replacements for excessive worn tires. So I get a phone call that says, uh mister, we can't mount 285's on factory width rims any more. Sorry. Better look into new rims. (I knew this would come to light some day down the road and today was that day) So I said that's below average since I've bought so many 285's from you and you mounted them all on factory GM rims.???? Uh yes sir but... blah blah blah... How about I make you a deal you can't refuse on a set of rims... I'm listening...
So I walk out of the tire shop with 4ea MB70 rims (rims I was going to buy next year for my b-day), two brand new BGF 285's, chrome valve stems, mounted, balanced and life time bal. and war. stuff.... all for what two new tires would have run me... Duh ok. Seems discount really wanted to keep me as a customer and they did just that.
Oh and boy talk about a new feel to the truck. Granted I got new tires on the back but I still have the same half worn front tires as I did going in and what a difference. The handling is very nice and I don't get road hop any more. Nor do I get any skidding in quick tight turns. Sure the rear end still will let loose but hey that's whats under the hood not whats on the pavement. I heard that going from stock rims to an 8" rim with 285s would help but I didn't think that much. I haven't had it on the highway or tow yet but from just my 45min ride home I won't be going back I can say that... So if ya get the chance to get some 8" rims inside those 285's do so. Heck, especially if your tire dealer wants to keep you. I did have to do some more trimming on the air dam and inner fender well but not much.
