Brand new truck taking some time to get used to. At a stop with in gear can hear exhaust tone change while at rest. Sounds like something is opening/closing causing exhaust note to change. Sounds smooth then with no reason gets a deep rumble. Has 4 inch exhaust with no cat. Probably normal, just curious if anyone has experienced this and had an explanation.

Thanks,
Jeff

What you are hearing is a result of the vanes in the turbo changing position.

On mine, with the 4" turbo back it will go back and forth between the hairdryer/jet 'ssshhh' and the gasser with header 'bu-bu-bu'.

I definitely get some confused looks from some people!

Normal. You wouldnt believe the amount of people stop and ask me what makes the truck sound like that. And you know it is too hard to explain thatt to someone who knows nothing about turbochargers, so I always just say its diesel:ro)

My guess would be the variable vein turbo.......my truck does this too...majority of the time in the morning.....sounds kinda like a jet plane with no cat and the full mbrp system.

Same here. I get looks when I remote start it and then it does this without me in the truck. :cool2:

If ya listen close, I do a lot of idle'n, open the hood and see for yourself! My exhaust sound will change as the cool'n fan cycles on and off. It will run even on a cold morn, off and on and so on!

yeah, I have noticed that too. I always thought it was just the fan kicking on and off, if it is the turbo, it seems to be affected by the fan running.

I figured thats what it was, start it up in the morning and it has a nice crisp Bwaaappppppp, then HISSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Kind of wish the deep sound was there all the time, but it is cool sitting in traffic and people looking at the tailpipe with a WTF look.
