Can someone tell me how to change out the carrier bearing on my driveshaft? I cant figure out how it comes off. The rubber crap is shredded and its making some annoying sounds.

You either need a press and a bearing splitter OR a large hammer, oxy accetylene CUTTING torch and an individual who is a little gifted with said torch and hammer. In short, it pretty much presses on, they are often difficult to drive off with a hammer and punch, but easy to drive the new one on with a hammer and a piece of tubing about the size of the bearing race. I tell even the most experience guys to find someone familiar with it to help, mainly because one misplaced hammer swing can ruin the splines on your stub or leave a dent in the tube that knocks the driveshaft out of true, (which really isnt that true from the factory anyhow)

I guess whats got me confused is that there is a metal shroud coming off the bearing and it looked like it wouldnt go past the splined part, like it was pressed on then the splined section was put on...but thats dumb now that Im thinking about it. I guess Ill just have to tear it out and beat the crap out of it.

There will be 2 metal shrouds, one is part of the bearing, the other presses on after, and the rubber boot slides over it and clamps on.
