2 tank veg conversion... 35 gallon Diesel tank, 55 gallon Veg tank. After 1,200 miles since my last Diesel fueling, I just put 29 gallons of Diesel in my truck. Not bad considering most of my driving is around town.
That's 41mpg of Diesel... the rest is Straight Veg.

I have gotten as high as 60 mpg.

What is your filtering/dewatering process? Any problems with onboard veg filter pluging too quickly?

I have 2 settling tanks, with 5 micron water filters between them. After it's been settled twice, it goes into a third tank. The third tank has a 5 micron water filter and a 5 micron spin-on Diesel filter. All 3 tanks are heated. The veg filter on the truck lasts a very, very long time.

I centrifuge my oil & then run through a 5 micron bag filter. Onboard filter was plugging up after only a few thousand km. Once processed I store my oil in the 5 gallon buckets it comes in & have noticed that after sitting a few days there is very fine brown sediment settling to the bottom of the buckets. I have since added a third step of polishing through a 5 micron whole house filter & now don't see any sediment in the bootom of my buckets. Hopefully this will solve my problem but haven't run enough km to know for sure.

I'm a firm believer of using the same filter in your processing as you do in your truck. This way you'll rarely have to replace the filter on the truck, which never plugs up at a convenient time :)

Your right about plugging up at a bad time. It's always whenI'm on a long trip. Then I have to rurn dino.:(
How ofthen do you change your filters on your settling tanks & how long do you let the oil settle?
What temp do you heat you settling tanks with & what do you heat them with?

How often I have to change the filters on the filtering system depends entirely on how long I let it settle. Generally speaking I get about 100 gallons out of my final stage filters. I usually settle for at least overnight but sometimes when I'm in a hurry I settle for just a few hours.
I heat the tanks with 220v hot water heater elements powered by 110v. This quarters the wattage, ie. 4000 watt 220v element on 110v = 1000 watts. This won't burn the oil but heats it pretty quickly. You can strap a water heater thermostat to the side of a drum to turn it on and off or you can wire it to a plug and just leave it plugged in for a couple hours. A fish tank aquarium heater works great if you're not in a hurry, 350watt will heat a 55 gallon drum to 90*F in 8 - 12 hours, even in the winter.
Temperature isn't important, 80*F is good, over 100*F is just a waste of power (IMO). This time of year I don't heat the tanks at all.
