First off, I hate to pollute the DieselPlace with talk of four cylinder gassers, but I have an issue I am trying to figure out. I know that there are a number of very knowledgeable techs and others on here, so I thought that I would run this past all of you. This car, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, is my commute car that gets my wife and I to work and back. On Monday morning, when I went to back out of the garage, I noticed the 'Service' light was on. Not the 'Check Engine Soon' light, but an indicator for 'Service' with a wrench next to it. I went ahead and went into work, but was pretty much worried and waiting all the way there. Along the way, while sitting in traffic, I could tell from the reflection off the tailgate ahead of me that my DRL's were not on. This was odd to me, but I did not attribute the two together. Anyway, after work we got in the car and when I started it, I noticed that the light was gone, so I thought it was just a fluke. But when I put it in Reverse to back out of the spot, the DRL indicator on the dash as well as the DRL's flashed five times, went out, and the 'Service' light again came on. I shut it off, and restarted it, and the 'Service' light was again out. This time I turned on my headlights before shifting out of park, and I did not get any indicator flashing nor light flashing, as well, I did not have the 'Service' light on. So, can I now assume that there is a link between the DRL's not working properly and the 'Service' light, or is this flashing a way of getting my attention to a more severe problem? I replaced the DRL relay in the fuse panel, but the condition still exists.

I thought that I would run this past some of you to get ideas before I go into troubleshooting the DRL system, in the event that this was simply an indicator of bigger things and nothing to do with the DRL's. Any ideas on where to start looking or what to look for? Any ideas are appreciated, thanks for your help.

More than likely is a drl problem, make sure you dont have a drl bulb out. Otherwise you will have to get the code pulled

my wife had some similiar problems w/ her 2001 cavalier
her dim lights also quite working but this did cause the drl to mess up similiar to what you said..
after trying many other things including a new bulbs and new dimmer switch I took apart the headlight harness and found a broken wire....some engineer at gm had the forsight to run the dim light wire from the drivers side across the front of the car then make a sharp bend and back to the drivers side bulb. the wire broke and cause the dims to quite working fixed the wire and all light problems went away...
hope this helps
