: pyro gauge and boost gauge
sierradmax 04-26-2005, 01:54 PM I would like to add both gauges to the driver side a-pillar. Boost gauge looks simple but I am a little afraid to drill into the exhaust manifold in order to insert the pyro gauge bung. I have seen people drill while the manifold is in place but can't the metal filings damage the turbo? What are people's reccomendations? Should I spend a day ripping the truck apart to get to the manifold or drill while in place?
thanks,
Justin
dentman4054 04-26-2005, 02:00 PM do a search on BMDMAX - cool dude put up a how to on his site..... calledsomehting like guide to gauge hotness
sierradmax 04-26-2005, 02:03 PM yeah i have his site as a bookmark but he drilled into the manifold. I'm a little skeptical to do this.
LBZ DMAX 04-26-2005, 02:14 PM Removing the manifold was not difficult at all. The hardest part for me was putting the manifold back in. I couldn't get the bolts from the flange to align, so I had to call my pops for a hand!;) With his help, it was 15 minutes to put it back in. The only reason why I removed the manifold was because I have great luck in things going wrong when others do it without any problems.:o: Good luck either way!
Kappa9012 04-26-2005, 02:18 PM it's never a good idea to let metal shavings get into a turbo, if you can help it, but we have had nuts and bolts dropped into turbine wheels and compressor wheels here at work, and I have yet to see one fail, granted they make a **** load of noise, and tear up the inlet and outlet tube, but never a turbo failer.
I don't think a few filings are gonna hurt much. But remember your only measuring one bank.
Grenlins 04-26-2005, 02:25 PM so easy to take the manifold off it's rediculous. gaskets are reuseable. Your looking at an 1 to 1.30 hr. job
NCMIC 04-26-2005, 02:32 PM yeah, but if you leave the truck idle, the filings will go out the exhaust. your turbo doesn't create boost at idle, basically not working. www.kennedydiesel.com has tech tips for installing them both.
if you drill the exhaust manifold, while on the truck, best to keep the truck idle, even while tapping it.
D/A Power 04-26-2005, 02:34 PM I was a bit skeptical too, but after thoroughly reading about it here I was reassured. I drilled mine while it was running so that as the drill broke through many of the shavings were blown out (just make sure you wear safety glasses:eek: ). The few that go through are pretty sporadic and aren't likely to do any damage - kind of like some lint hitting the turbine ;) .
Basically the same with tapping, only the grease helps capture shavings well. And don't worry, the exhaust coming out the hole while you're tapping is not as hot as you might think.
If you are absouletly terrified, then you are probably better off removing the manifold - just plan on a little extra time!

:exactly: Guess my typing took too long - Plus your description was a bit shorter.:)
coyotekid 04-26-2005, 02:47 PM I too was worried about drilling while the manifold is on the truck, but don't worry. There is a tremendous amount of exhaust pressure at idle to blow the chips out. I had a buddy help me do mine with the truck running, and it went great.

wwpiga 04-26-2005, 02:52 PM I did mine last saturday. If you have a short drill you don't have to remove the fender interliner. Start with a 3/16 drill and work your way up to the .339 or 11/32 for 1/8 pipe. I used 5 steps this keeps the chips small and it is easier to drill. The first hole I didn't wear safety glasses and I got a chip in the eye. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES.:coolio: :smashfrea
The exhaust will get a little hot. If you don't want to keep your engine running. A shop vac on blow inserted in the exhaust pipe will blow the metal chips out the hole while you are drilling and tapping.
sierradmax 04-26-2005, 03:18 PM ok, I am going to order the duramax pre turbo dual gauge pillar mount kit from kenny diesel.
I don't like the style gauges though. I prefer the white gauges. these =

Will Kennydiesel have these gauges, if not, will those plug in to the package?
thanks guys
Cougar281 04-26-2005, 04:11 PM Anybody have any how-to/pictures for drill/tapping the intake for a boost sender?
sierradmax 04-26-2005, 04:24 PM BDMAX bought a new intakemanifold from superdiesel.I don'tknow how to order this....
jnieberlein 04-26-2005, 05:36 PM Anybody have any how-to/pictures for drill/tapping the intake for a boost sender?
I dont have any pictures of how to do the boost guage but there are some floating around here I just took the intake off the truck and drilled and tapped it on the work bench, I did the same with the exhaust manafold I wussed out and pulled it off and tapped it on the bench too the hardest thing about the exhaust was the third bolt on the exhaust pipe its self other than that just a little time consuming, the intake was really easy just pull it mark it drill tap and you are set. They SD manifolds look great I just didnt feel like forkin out the dough for one...to each his own. I will try and find a link to the intake/boast mounting thread
