: What tuner upgrade?

I just purchased my first duramax a few days ago, an 05 2500. I traded in my 04 dodge cummins 3500. I was running a TST pmcr on my dodge witch was to much for the stock auto, so im not looking for that much power because i do not plan on an trans upgrade. Im debating between three different chips the predater, bullydog, and the quadzilla. Ive noticed lots are running the predater, few with bullydog, and i cant find anyone running quadzilla. I would really like some help choosing the right chip. thanks

if your not planning on a tranny upgrade, i would stick with an edge ez module. think the max is 90 hp? i'm sure others will chime in. also do a search, lots of reading.

I want something with the ability to remove the speed limiter, and raise the rev limiter also.

Can't beat the predator for the price and performance.

Best bang/$$ is Predator. Keep it on the low power levels. Once you taste the sweetness of the "100" tune, you will have a hard time going back. Pretend it doesn't exist. Your trans will survive awhile, but not for too long.

If you need an LLY tune that will instantly fry your trans, I can hook you up in a heartbeat. And even point you to the good trans shops. :D

I'm an expert by no means, but here's what I'd do if I had it to do over again:

1. Install gauges practically on the dealer's lot. You'll learn a lot from a pyro!

2. Then install a "chip" of your choice!

I went with the Predator, but I don't have a whole lot of experience with any other LLY tuners. The Predator is a good product--I picked mine up for around $300 used, which is a real bargin for 100+ RWHP. Plan to spend about $400 new.

Has anyone ran the quadzilla? I like how you can raise the rev limiter to 4400 rpm. You say with the predater that it will fry the trans on the high setting. Is this because of experience or just a guess? I would think the trans would be good for another 100 hp. Speaking of guages does anyone have any pics of a nice pillar guage setup?

I have the predator also, pretty easy to use. Welcome to the Place!

Why do you want to raise the rev limiter so badly? IIRC reading that peak power is still in the low to mid 3's even with the rev limiter increase. It is basically there for the guys who are maxing out the revs in 5th and still want to go faster. Someone chime in here and tell me if I am wrong or right.

I believe that the trans can handle up to 90 hp and 125 ft lb of torque. If you drive it everywhere like a grandma, I would think that you would be fine. The problem is, the people who install more power are most likely to be flogging it at every chance they get. That is bad! Do a search for gauges (pyro and boost gauges seem to be the most popular.) Trippin makes an overhead console gauge mounting bracket that looks real nice. There are a lot of nice gauge packages to be found by the search.

The Dmax's already rev higher than most other diesels out there. I personally wouldn't want to rev one any more, because it's just not necessary unless you plan on building some sort of a rail car.

And while the Allison is an excellent tranny and built very stout from the factory, you're not going to get away with an extra 100 RWHP for long. If you don't believe us, try it and report back after several thousand miles.

It's not just the HP you are adding with tuners. You are adding a lot of torque and the tranny don't like it. You can get away with it if you drive like a granny but then what's the point of adding the power. If you want the power you'll have to do more mods to be able to use it effectively. I also don't see the point in the higher RPM's. Like Coyotekid said if you don't beleive the people who have been through all this then try it and report back to us on how it works out for ya.

Also do some searching on the site for your questions. I know people have posted pics of their pillar guages.

I know from dyno experience that the power starts dropping off past 3100. I have an edge w/ attitude as well as a preditor. I think the preditor gives you more bang for the buck, however the edge w/attitude gives you many, many options for power as well as safety! Just my $.02!!

mcrat- do you think the 65 and/or 85 predator tune will fry the ally? cause I been running 65... waiting to get gauges before I load 85. Will 85 do damage? Can I stack edge with its ally protection and then back it up with a predator to get more power than predator offers? thanks man

Can I stack edge with its ally protection and then back it up with a predator to get more power than predator offers? thanks man I'll give an opinion here. If you are looking to use the Edge as a means of protecting the ally from damage it will only defuel what it has added. If you are stacking the predator with the edge and you still have to be careful because the edge can fry a tranny by itself at levels above 3 let alone stacked. If you want to run a 85 tune I recommend using the 90hp tune of the Edge and defuel all locked shifts. I believe it will be better for the alli than the 85 tune of the predator since the edge will defuel when it senses tranny slip. The pred has zero alli protection. If you stick with the Pred 65 tune you should be OK. Just my .02.

I started limping my Allison within a month of running the 100 hp (125 hp on the dyno) Predator tune.. The tune is like crack cocaine, you won't be able to get on it just once in a while.

I did not abuse it daily:) .

I did a couple good burnouts and lots of passing. I was very cautious about WOT downshifts.

DON'T run around with the 100HP tune unless you are ready to do the trans.

Go with the Pred, exausht, and gauges. Put the Predetor on 65 to start and you will be happy for a while. If your goal is to be faster than your old truck I think this will do it. Our local premier diesel tuning shop in town told me that a dodge running 100 hp more than a dmax/ally still won't beat you because of the allison tranny. I don't know if that is true or not but I don't get beat real often and when I do it's obvious the people have put bank into their trucks.

Oh, I forgot welcome to the board this place is awesome. A word of caution though, this place is every bit as addicting as these trucks. So if you want to stay married give her some time too.
