Had one of the fellows over in the "Ask the Techs" section run a VIN on a truck that I am considering. Specifically, it's a 94 Silverado 2500 4x4 with the 6.5 TD.

Interestingly, the claim history shows a 'J5955 - Pump, Fuel Injection (Diesel) Replace)' on 12/29/00 with 94500 mi, preceeded a month earlier (11/29/00) at 93800 with a 'T5550 -1994-2002 Replace Diesel Injection Pump'.

Am I reading this correctly? 2 pumps in less than a month and less than 1000mi ? Truck itself now has 160,000mi on it.

Other than that the truck comes out 'clean' on CarFax.

Anyone? Buehler?

TIA

That's nothing. Simi-crazy ran my dad's vin and his truck got 4 IP's and a EEprom a couple years before he bought it. It has never given a days trouble with the pump since, except we put on one new FSD. Other than that it hasn't hesitated once.

Carfax don't mean squat. I ran several known wrecked vehicles through the system and they all came back clean.

That's pretty scary:eek: ! For what it's worth, I absolutely love my 6.5.

My carfax showed a new IP every 10K miles for it's first 160K. Mines been running fine for over 20K now, I remote mounted my FSD after only a couple month's of ownership. I highly doubt that the dozen or so IP's were actually bad. Don't get me started on the quality and knowledge level of service I've experienced from dealers. The book says injection pump is the first rule of troubleshooting and even if it doesn't fix the problem you're still out the $2000.

I have a customer who has had 10 put on under warranty at no charge. His truck is now out of extended warranty. 5 trips to the dealer where on the back of a wrecker. I have one customer who had 200k on the truck before the first pump. Most trucks seem to have at least one or two pumps before 100K.

I had GM run the warranty claims on my 97 (I bought it March 04) and it is on pump #4 and PMD #6. PMD #5 only lasting less than a year and only 7,000 miles. Current pump was replaced in 2002. Now has 40k on it.

I believe most dealer's diagnostics go something like this:

Hey Joe, does it look like a diesel on the back of that tow truck?
Yepper it sure is.
Joe, the pumps bad in it.
Opps, now that it got closer, and actually into our lot, jeez, it's a gasser, betta luck next time.
