: Broken Starter mount
dag4566 04-25-2005, 09:35 AM Need to know how bad my situation is. I got an 83 chevy 4x4 with a 6.2 diesel. I tried to crank it up and the starter would not engage. I removed it and found that one of the ears on the block is broken off. Is there a fix for this?

Really want to get this thing going to be used as a farm / ranch / trail rig. We used to have an 87 6.2 4x4 burban and several 6.5 turbos. Now we have 2 duramaxes. Hopefully I can get this thing going as well.
So :help:
D.Camilleri 04-25-2005, 10:30 AM The cause of this is failure to use the front starter brace. Not knowing the exact conditon of your block, hard to say exactly how to address it. Do you have the broken piece? Can you take some pictures? Do you have the front starter brace?
dag4566 04-25-2005, 10:54 AM I have the starter brace and the pictures are in the link. I do not have the broken peice however.
D.Camilleri 04-25-2005, 02:36 PM Since the whole ear isn't missing from the block, I would try and get the edges very clean, thread in a bolt, (liberally coated with grease), and fill the broken part with JB weld or some other epoxy metal filler.:grd: Don't forget to loose the egr off of that engine, and giver a little more fuel):h
dag4566 04-25-2005, 05:15 PM Sweet, I am going to use some por 15 epoxy and clean up the threads with a tap and die set. Is there a FAQ or instructions on adding fuel and removing the EGR?
69camarox 04-25-2005, 08:29 PM i had a block that looked like that what i did was i took a piece of threaded rod put the starter on in place put the rod up through the outer bolt hole into the block and braised the rod right to the block put a nut on the botom the other bolt in and the bracket on the front if you have to take starter off it can be slid down off the rod never had another problem with it
D.Camilleri 04-25-2005, 11:23 PM Best way to address the egr intake is to throw it away and replace with a non egr intake. Watch ebay motors, they are pretty common right now. Saw one go for 9.00 the other day. Turning up fuel is fairly simple, maybe I could take some pictures and start a thread on how to.... oh wait, I think I need to clean the shop first.):h
dag4566 04-25-2005, 11:32 PM I am gonna take it to a welding shop to get a peice of rod on there to see if that will work out. Thanks alot man I am gonna look for the non EGR intake. Anybody know where I can get a book on the 6.2 to know where to hook up the fuel line and other Misc things I need to get this thing running.

Diesel_Day_Dreamin 04-26-2005, 12:02 AM Go to the Hardware store and get a brass 3/8-16 threaded bolt. Next stop, welders supply store for some "nickle" welding rods (stick welder). Thread the brass bolt into existing hole and have at it with the stick welder avoiding "direct" aiming of arc towards the brass bolt. When you have built up enough weld, remove the brass bolt (weld won't stick to the brass bolt), grind flat again, & retap the treads to clean them out. Voila! Almost as good as new!
dag4566 04-26-2005, 12:06 AM Sweet. I just need to take it to a welding shop to get it done hopefully in two weeks when finals are over.
Would this have not allowed the starter to engage or do I have another problem on my hands?
Diesel_Day_Dreamin 04-26-2005, 12:17 AM I had the same thing happen on a 400 sb chevy. The starter could then "swing" on the remaining bolt causing engaging problems. In my case, it was the lack of engagement. Hope this helps.
palemale 04-26-2005, 12:45 AM This past winter I wuz trying to weld my Fisher snow plow. The weld kept cracking. So I was informed to pre-heat the area. Used oxy-acetylene, and it worked like a charm. Tons of plowing and curb bashing, and looks good! Pre-heat!:cool2:
palemale 04-26-2005, 12:49 AM Just bought an '84 6.2 'Burban today. The starter sounds "tight". Sorta' "screeching" on the flywheel. Gas engines use shims, I'm very familiar with them. 6.2's as well? I'll definitely check the front strap. :duh:
thumbsmasher 04-27-2005, 09:19 AM I don't have that brace on my starter. I've known about it, but my starter seems to work fine. But now that I know I can crack my block I want it. Where can I get this brace, or can I fab one? Anyone have pics that show the installation?
Thanks

thumbsmasher 04-29-2005, 09:42 AM Thanks, I'll check in with the local dealer
dag4566 05-09-2005, 05:40 PM Welded up the peice of rod and it bolted up and stays put now but the starter will not engauge enough. I crank it and the gear moves foreward and spins on the flywheel and stays foreward. I am going to go get an orielys starter and see if it works. The dealer quoted me 350 bones for a new delco starter. I am impatient and if the orielys one does not work I'll return it and then get a 6.5 one off of ebay.

dag4566 05-09-2005, 08:59 PM Its a direct drive and I have the strap......I checked a local wrecking yard and for 50 bucks I can get a 6.5 starter off of a 96 with a 6 month money back warranty. I might just do that....... Since I only paid 200 bucks for the truck to start with.
