Not mine, but someone I know....any help here?

<!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->It has to do with the safety switch in the automatic column shifter. You can only pull the key if the shifter is in neutral or park. Looks like the mechanism that's in the column broke.. The truck still runs and drives great, but I have to disconnect the battery to shut it off http://forums.corvetteforum.com/images/smilies/willy_nilly.gif

I pulled the steering wheel and a few more parts, but can't manage to get to the ignition lock...

Any help or input would be appreciated on how to fix that issue...

Don't know how the diesel ignition works but the switch on a gasser is located on the steering column below the dash. A rod from the steering colum lock to the switch acuates the switch when you turn the key, Our diesels may be the same way. Just a thought.

Want to add I think your switch on the steering colum might be defective or out of adjustment. The key should not come out when your in gear, if it does, its a sign the lock is worn out.I just had eye surgery so In can't get under the dash to tell you how to check it. Someone should come to your aid soon.

what year truck? The newer models (silverado, sierra) have the ignition switch in the upper part of the column. Just remove the upper and lower covers just below the strg wheel and it's right there. As for the lock cylinder itself I've not had the pleasure to change one... yet, so I cannot help you on that part.

Come to think of it, GM went with an upper ignition switch around 95 or so, the older ones have the rod actuated switch mounted low on the column
