: New or fix IP wiring harness

Well thanks to mother nature I have squirl damage to my IP wiring harness. They have chewed right through one of the wires going to the optic sensor and two other wires have bare patches. It is a wonder the truck even started.

I have not called for a price yet but I am guessing it will be in the $150 or $200 range and I am not happy about paying that. However, I have my doubts that splicing it would be a good fix. It might work for a couple of years but all the shake and shimmy on top of the engine would increase the risk of a failure at the splice. I would not mind taking that risk if the wire were easy to get at but it is under the intake manifold--not easy to get at.

Anyone have a 97 parts truck that wants to sell the harness? In the alternative, anyone have a foolproof fix for the harness?

I seem to remember reading that the harness is a stanadyne part. Not available from gm. You could try a junkyard. 94-99 should be the same. I wouldn't risk splicing it because the optical sensor is very sensitive to resistance. You would need the high temp wire to repair it also.

bk95td you may be right. I just came from the dealer and they cannot find that harness. They even called their GM help number no luck. They would like to know the other stuff the harness plugged into besides the IP but I could not remember so I will get them that tomorrow. I am now thinking a junk yard might be my best bet.

Anyone with a parts truck?

Well none of the junk yards in the immediate 40-50 mile radius can help me. Several have had 6.5s in the yard in the past but not now.

Anyone know of a yard that has a 6.5 and would work with me over the phone and mail the harness?

I got a new ip harness from the dealer a few years ago - I believe they called it an 'extension harness' - not a wiring harness or ip harness - see if that helps.

I needed one for mine a few years ago. I could get it from the dealer but it would have taken to long so all I did was repair the old one. I don't think its that expensive.

You may be able to get the harness off the big auction site as well. that'll will save time and money. That harness looks pretty beat up. I wouldn't use it.

There's a debate between splicing or soldering.
I will myself rather solder than splicing.

That said, Dave is right, you'll find some at fleabay, affordable price and save time.
I will check when I'll be home tonite, I may have a new one as a spare. i can send it to you for just cost of shipping (from New Caledonia to your location).

That would be great! Just to be sure we are talking the same harness it is the one that has two connectors at the firewall and eight connectors at the pump end. It travels all the way under the exhaust manifold. Thanks for checking.

I have 2 numbers for the engine harness-
15302636 and 10154618
I have had to order several of these for the same problem you have.
They are not cheap.

You might be able to repair the main harness. I'd just solder the wires back together over crimping them. A main harness isn't cheap, like the others have said. It can't hurt to try and repair it.

Easy to repair and you can be back up and running in know time.

matuva that is not it but thanks for looking.

It is not the main engine harness. That one is expensive--around $3000.

This harness plugs into the main at the firewall, runs under the intake manifold right up the center of the block and branches into 8 plugs. One plug goes to the boost sensor, IAT sensor, and the rest go to the pump.

Seems there are many who think this can be fixed. I am a little concerned about the resistance because these wires go to the optic sensor. Maybe I can get an electric guru to weigh in--will adding wire, 2 crimps, and solder still keep me within parameters for the optic sensor.

Well the parts guy finally tracked down the harness part #10154618. It has been discontinued but there are still 5 listed on his computer at other dealerships. List price is $456.55. The parts guy was nice enough to give me the dealer cost which is $260.23. He suggested that I might be able to get it for dealer cost because it is just taking up shelf space.

$260.23 seems a little steep for some wire but I pull an RV with this truck and we are sometimes hundreds of miles from home--would hate to have a problem. Still weighing whether I should splice or try and buy one of the harnesses.

i know the harness your talking about now. IAT, MAP, etc sensors. one of those plugs also goes to the IP/PMD/F-sol harness i believe.

That harness can be repaired. I'd just get a good shot at the busted wires and solder them then put some heat shrink tubing over the repaired breaks and you'll be good to go. It's a lot less expensive than replacing that entire harness.
