Hi everyone,

I have a 1984 Chevy P/U with a 1986 6.2 diesel. The problem is the truck either wont start hot or will start after cranking for an extended time. I recently replaced the injection pump from a rebuilder who tested the pump and stated that it bench tested fine. (He seems to be a good/ honest guy as I have dealt with him in the past). The original pump leaked fuel and was replaced with this one (in case anyone wanted to know). He had me check the solenoid with the engine hot by shutting down the truck and leaving the key in the ignition (run position) and unplugging/ plugging the solenoid (listening for the "click"). It appears to be working fine. The pump is advanced the width of 1 line on the flange. The original pump was aligned perfectly. NOTE: The truck will start back up hot if it is done within 1 minute of shutdown. Any help is appreciated.

6.2 pumps were not nearly as notorious for hard start hot complaint due to Hydraulic Head & Rotor wear, but it does happen. It can also be difficult to detect on the test stand. Have you checked your fuel filter? Good supply pressure with no air?

is your starter and batteries in good shape? If the starter is going bad it will have more resistence when hot. Mike

Filter is brand new. The batteries are new and the starter is new. It cranks over fast and furious. I am now considering replacing (yet again) the inj. pump. thanks.

Be sure you get your pump from a reputable injector pump shop. Or your rebuilder had a hot date Friday evening or a hangover on Monday morning. You should not be having trouble with your pump, but I suspect the pump is bad. You might try having another shop that has a test stand test your pump before you get another pump. I don't think an air leak in the fuel supply line would cause your specific problem.

Had the same problem with a 4911 on a 6.5. Shut off the engine and allow to heat soak the fuel would get so thin that the head and rotor could not build pressure. After a cool down period it start and run. the vane pump in the rear of the housing was gone. Installed a reman 4911 at a cost of $317 and have been going for over 70k more

Best bet, send it back where you got it, and explain the problem and they should fix it for you no charge...should anyway.

Thanks for all the input. I will replace (again). And hopefully, this time I will get it right.

I had this same problem on a '91 2500 I bought about a month ago. I would really have to crank it to get it started. Sometimes the glow plug light wouldn't come on, or only stayed on for a very short period. One day (luckily in a Walmart parking lot) it wouldn't start at all. Just cranked and cranked. But it seemed the batteries wore down really fast to the point it was hardly turning over. Popped the hood, and jerked the most likely looking culprit. Took it in to have tested, and it was only putting out 25 cca! Replaced it w/ a new battery, and the truck fired right up. Haven't had a problem w/ it since.
