I am going to buy a new truck. How does the Cummins compare to the Duramax? I like both of them, but I want to get the best. Thanks.

HI JPLP & FIRST THINGS FIRST! WELCOMNE TO OUR SITE & may you get all your questions answered quickly & correctly. As far as engines go, let's a toss up, there are god & bad points about either. The difference is the transmission!! The allision is the best thing out there right now as a truck is only as good as its weakest link. Both engine could be equal in all ares BUT the transmissions become the weakest link as more power is applied. I believe the Allison is hands-down the leader of the pack!! Howard

All depends on what you want truck wise. The Dodge automatic is very reliable since it's been upgraded to the 48RE. Allison is the better transmission but power holding it's nothing special. Both are expensive to upgrade. The Dodge 4x4 is a totally different truck than a GM 4x4.

The Dmax Allison is a bit more finicky when adding power than the Cummins/48RE. I had both and find the Cummins/48RE will take a beating without repeated defueling or tranny limping. It will just go. Sure you can tear up the tranny if you're not careful but if you are putting on that much power you should be upgrading anyway.

I had much better warranty satisfaction with GM than with the Dodge although fortunately I have not had to use D/C service much. They do provide a car if you leave it.

GM has the ride and the handling. Dodge has ride height.

if a 4wd straight axle on the dodges 2500 and up, ifs on the chey gmc, bucket options in the chevys dodge I dont think they hae a true bucket console out yet, dodge is know for its long miles list (friend has one with over 250k and not been apart) have seen some duramaxes with 180k and up, but cant give any insite to it. both good trucks.

The third gen Dodges have excellent ride and handling.

Cummins is the better engine, hands down, esp the injectors, the Dmax will likey give you trouble with them down the road. The Allison is def higher tech, and beefy, but the 48Re is simple, strong and effective, although Id give the edge the the Alli, esp for its tow/haul with engine braking. Dodge handling is excellent on the 3rd gens, the ride is close, but gms is slightly softer.Dodges brakes are much bigger and better than GMs,brakes are very important to me,in a HD pickup that is heavy and tows heavy.Gm has better crew cab,but IMO the Dodge crew cab is adequete for most people and much more manageable plowing and in traffic, parking lots. Both great trucks, you couldnt go wrong with either, both have excellent resale as well.Id have a tough time deciding, but my Dodge dealer is light yrs ahead of my local Gm dealer, and theres just somethign about that inline Cummins engine, that I just cannot resist.

I though they both used the same Bosh common rail system. I also heard that the Dodge is having the same injector problems as the D-Max. Please correct me if I am wrong here. I beleive this relates only to the latest generations of both engines.

The cummins engine does not have nearly the amount of injector issues that the Duramax has. Just go to the Injector replacement survey and see for yourself.......then go look on the Dodge web sites and compare.......

Its in the duramax LB7 forum...just do a search. What it does show is the amount of people that have had there injectors replaced.

That is funny I've heard the same thing. In the past maybe the CTD had better injectors but I think we are level truf now. Also the CTD will be pumping more through each injector than the dmax, maybe shorter life than ours.

JPLP: Drive them both and then decide. What sold me on the Chevy was the room, particulary in the rear seat. Dodge was too cramped for what I needed. All other things being equal, the Chevy just plain rode better. I've been very happy with my purchase so far.

yup the chevy will ride better but i dont think it handles better.Oh and you dont have to step up into the chevy like you do a real truck.nerf bars not needed on a chevy so that will save you a few bucks.

Not bad out of 16K plus members. I know not all have D-Max's but the majority of the 16K do. Personally I think both motors are good motors. I just chose GM over Dodge for feature comforts and the allison reputation.

Go on over to the TDR if you think the 3rd gen dodges don't have injector problems. The 48re can handle power increase with out problem.......put some miles on your truck and let us know about that hoot at about the 40,000-50,000 mile range.
