: Anyone with just a Trans go?
1bad01 04-24-2005, 05:52 PM I was just wondering if anyone has just the shift kit installed on there truck because I was thinking about doing it cause I just can't afford a Suncoast 3 right now or anytime in the near future.
Is it a good idea, or is it pissing money in the wind?
Got Juice? 04-24-2005, 06:12 PM Should handle everything of 450 RWHP
After that, you are on borrowed time IMHO
ChrisF 04-24-2005, 06:23 PM I have it in mine... helps a lot but my converter is about on its last leg now... I don't limp the trans anymore but I can slip the converter when its in lock up in 5th... I would recomend a converter as well... thats my plans for this summer is a complete level III. I am also running a TST box, 145hp and 350tq somtimes stacked with at Superchips... Stacked I can smoke the crap out of the trans if I wanted to..
1bad01 04-24-2005, 06:38 PM Thanks for the info fella's sounds like a good investment for now. How much $$ am I looking at for install with fluids and filters and everything else?
dmaxalliTech 04-24-2005, 10:01 PM I ran one for nearly a year with the stock convertor. Converter was weak spot. I never dyno'd it after the trip to JK's, couldnt get the conv to not slip on the dyno. The boxes/stacks I run make 500 hp on other trucks so I figure I was close to that at least for most of the time. Pulled it down and all clutches looked new still...converter on the other hand....
Its a good upgrade, but by the time you get it installed, your in the 1200 range, add another 1300 for a triple disk converter of choice and you get to 2500 in a hurry...
1bad01 04-25-2005, 05:34 PM Does it require pulling the tranny out? Sure sounds like it for 1200 bucks.
StraitDiesel 04-25-2005, 06:14 PM Yes it involves pulling the tranny... the kit includes c-2's and a couple other things that get changed in the tranny.
Dan
ChrisF 04-25-2005, 07:55 PM My kit didn't include the C-2's, But I would change them when you are there...
1bad01 04-26-2005, 04:11 PM About how many hours are involved in this so I can get an estimate from my tranny guy? keep in mind this will be the 1st Allison he's worked on but he is an ace on all other trannys so I don't think it will be too big a deal for him.
Mike L. 04-26-2005, 11:20 PM Make sure you have some C3s on hand with steels when you do this. Doing this upgrade without a converter will not last long.
offroaderjoe 06-21-2005, 12:12 AM Ya, anyone with just the shift kit installed? With added hyd pressure, better performance now?
DMax_Doug 06-21-2005, 01:10 AM I would at to GJ's input that it also depends on how you drive the truck as to whether it will hold 400-450rwhp. Towing, yes. Dragracing, powerbrake'd launches, etc, no it will not hold it very long, ask Mike L.
lakingslayer 06-21-2005, 09:49 AM Overbuild it! If you can't afford it now wait until you can and keep the power down to preserve the stock tranny. It will be worth it in the end.
kbstinky 06-21-2005, 12:12 PM What he says.
He is the MAN..................
Jonathan G 06-21-2005, 06:35 PM Learning from Mike L. and Dmaxallitech, you might as well do a Suncoast III. Might as well replace the clutch packs while the tranny is out. It will save you money in the future doing it right in the beginning.
Mike L. 06-21-2005, 10:40 PM Triple converter and Transgo will hold a lot. Problem with all of us is we keep pushing the limit of the trans mod. Realistic thought about what you will actually do to your Duramax in the future is a must. I would advise you to wait a while and do it right instead of paying someone double money. You could spend the money saved on your family and treat them to a good time.
