: Broke Down!!!!!!!

I got out of the USMC yesterday and was driving back home to AZ from NC which is about 2000 miles one way. I got about 400 miles into the trip and the truck just went crazy!!!! Here is what Happened. I was driving about 70mph, with the cruz control on and went to slow down. So I taped the brake to trun off the cruz control and it worked but when I went to tap the gas it would just take off like a bat out off hell. The i would tap the brake and the RPM's would in a flash go to 1000rpm's but then when i would go to tap the gas it would go again like a bat out of hell??!!! So I pull off the road and the idle was real rough...though there for a min. that the motor was going to jump out of the truck. So I turned it off. It turned off just fine but when I went to start it again it was just rev'ing real high then real low and then tried to give it gas and it would not work. It was just stuck in the high, low idle state. So I drove it to get out of traffic in a high, low pace for about a 1/4 mile then it just died!!! I had a extra PMD with me from pensacola diesel Inc. but I think it is a non- Dtech. but replace the old one with a six foot wire attached and still nothing happened. But when i was looking over the fuses I had a blowen fuel solenoid fuse under the hood but all the other fuses were in the cab were good to go. So i replaced the blowen fuse but still no action???!!! There is fuel getting to the fuel filter I checked that...So now I am stuck about 1500 miles from home. I had the truck towed to the local Chevy dealership. But they are not open till Monday. So any kind of help would be great. Or even Ideas...One thing about the Pensacola PMD that I got from them it had a strange little chip or something that it came with. So i also installed that into the PMD...Dont know if any of you all know what I am talking about also there...well thanks folks...NEED HELP....I have to say if it were not for bad luck I would have no luck at all!!!!

That chip look-alike is the resistor, it goes to the connector before you put in the cable connector. It only goes one way.

Before you go into panic, try to DO the checklist as best you can to help your methodically look test your truck.

By the way, try the new PMD without the extension cable first, just connect it to the stock PMD cable.
See if it starts like that.

Unfortunately it sounds like the armature in the IP has broken. The only way to fix that is with a new IP. The stealership will likely tell you you need a new IP no matter what anyways. Diesel shop is the best place for these things.

Also, where are you broken down?

I just finished putting in a rebuilt IP from Pensacola Diesel about 6 hours ago. Cost me $450 shipped without PMD. Would have been $650 with PMD. So far so good, except it looks like the OPS went south on me - had to bleed air 'manually'. Will debug that at the crack 'o dawn.

Anyway, if you have tools with you, not impossible to swap yourself. There is a thread I started below at http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=302894&highlight=curse. Post number two is highly informative. I'd modify it as follows. Injector lines don't have to be removed. No need to mark connectors - everything is keyed at least on my '95 Burb. No need to baggie bolts and nuts - it's hard to mess up. I laid mine out in sequence on the air intake grill in front of the windshield. Recommend running after hooking up new IP before putting on the manifold and checking for leaks.

Needed: 18mm box wrench, 18mm crescent box wrench with cut that passes of an injection line, 15mm deep socket for manifold studs, 13mm deep socket for some of same, brake cleaner fluid, large lever for getting serpentine tensioner loose and some patience.

Cost IP $450, intake gaskets $18, plenum gasket $6.

Swear jar $299. ;-)

Hope you broke down near a board member as you're more likely to get help with tools and the fix itself.

That is what i was thinking that it might be the IP I was hoping that it was not. But I guess that it the way it goes!!! I was poking around on Pen Diesel web site and saw that they had some in stock. I am just going to see what the dealer ship will say but I am sure that you are all right about the IP. I have a tool kit with me. I have all the need tools to remove and replace the IP. I am very luck a sales men at the dealer is letting me stay at his house!!! So If it is the IP then I am going to talk with him to see if i Can stay and get the truck towed here and order a IP from PEN Diesel and work on it myself. I dont really have a need for a platinum made IP from the dealer.... I am broke down in Birmingham Al. So if that it the case about the IP them I am going to call PEN Diesel and see about getting one maybe over nighted to me or something to that extent...Thanks for all your Help!!!!!!

There has been a lot of defective wire harnesses out in the market right now. Can't say the where made by EDAM because that would be blaming someone for selling junk.

Try the PMD without the harness.

There are 3 fuel injection shops in Birmingham.

Same exact thing happened on mine. IP went out big time! On mine, it opened wide up with a full-blown runaway. Then started "leap frogging" like you were stomping on the throttle. I think this ultimately affected my DM FW because it always had a groan in reverse when backing up a hill or in low when holding a load on a steap hill. I went through IPs at 85k, 98K and then went to the remote PMD and no trouble since then other than a PMD. I left the orignal PMD on the pump that the dealer put on when it was still under warranty and then have a remote PMD that I use. If the remote goes, I just plug in the original until I get another.

Can you tell us how high the RPMs went? The Engine Coolant temp can cause idle revving but only up to 1500 I think. You can try unplugging it and see what happens.

Did you install that resistor when you installed the PMD? Where is your PMD located. The PMD controls the IP fuel flow. So if it is messed up can cause high revving.

The RPMs I have no idea cant remember...I installed the resistor with the PMD, it didnt work at all again. I am going to call the shops tomorrow and see what the story is.

Is actually our central Distributor for Bosch, Zexel, Nippon Denso, and most other manufacturers. They don't do injection work. I am an injection pump tech at Industrial Diesel. We got Shanes truck rolling again. He had a few different things going on when it came in, the PMD had a short that kept blowing the 20a fuel sol fuse but ultimately the armature in the IP was spent. We put a brand new 5521 on there, replaced some fuel line, remote mounted the PMD and brought it right back to life.

Hope you get back by this way some time again and can stop by willingly :P.
