: Is it best to warm your diesel daily? How long does it take?

I was under the idea that it was best on our motors to warm them prior to use, but recently ive started it trying to warm it up and after 10 mins it really hasnt budged off the 160 degree mark, and seems to take a bit to warm up to normal operating temp. Is this the norm? Should you warm your diesel up or just get in and go?

I warm mine up for about 10 mins then go.

You should build a little heat before you take off, and take er easy for the first mile or two, thats what I do anyway.

I always start it, wait for the voltage meter to jump above 14V(that usually takes between 10 seconds and a minute depending on air temperature) and take off. I drive it nice and slow until the engine temp warms up. I don't know if it's good or bad, but with the price of fuel I'm not going to let it sit and idle... I figure driving slow with little load on the engine is a more efficient way of warming the engine.

I don't know how much we use, but when I first joined this site a lot of people recommended letting your truck idle for awhile before you drive it. Well I did that and my fuel mileage sucked, so I quit letting it warm up like that and have seen MPG increases.

60 seconds and then we go. I think you could let it idle and never reach OP Temp.
Just drive it easy until she gets warm.

I'll remote start and let er run depending upon how cold it is outside, the colder it is the longer I'll let it run. Max of 10 minutes before hitting the road. I do this daily and my mpg's aren't impacted too bad. These engines do get up to operating temps fairly quickly once you start driving. JJ :)

warm every day in morning for 10 minutes, but never in the middle of the day

I wait a few seconds and then ease on up the street about 1omoh and at the end of the block I ease out onto a main road and up it to 40mph (speed limit) . Use an oil with moly ( Schaefferis 7000 Blend) in it so I hope that gives me an added protection.

I start mine, idle it a couple of minutes, start out the driveway and the temperature starts to rise before I hit the road. (my driveway is 1/8 mile long) Ease it out the secondary road to the main road (speed limit is 30 mph for 2 1/2 miles). By the time I'm to the main road, temp is about 190° on a 40° to 50° day. At work, I let it idle 5 minutes and ease it until at least 160°. Just my 2¢.
