: Help!!!! Steering Wheel Install w buttons
jnieberlein 04-18-2009, 07:21 PM So I decided to install my steering wheel with controls. The Steering wheel I have is out of an 2004 the clockspring is also out of the same year, putting it in a 2006 well apparently there has been a change since then the addition of two extra wires on the 2006 appear to go up into the shifter, tap shift maybe?

Pictured on the left. My question is there a way to remove these wires from here without breaking anything (thats the important part)

and install them in the 2004 wiring harness? This appears to be the only difference between the two everything else matches and plugs write up with the exception of two left over wires green and black that don’t appear to go to anything!!!! Any help to get my back together and not like this would be greatly appreciated, these pictures are in my garage may be a little easier to see sorry for the clarity the camera was having a hard time focusing

Puffer 04-18-2009, 08:37 PM I cant see why you could not cut the wires off and tape them up , proving that they are not a power souce for something else .
jnieberlein 04-18-2009, 09:04 PM I would rather not cut them they go into the shifter, I am assuming that the 04 on only had 2 wires going into the shifter and the 06 now have four. I was thinking if if I could transfer the two extra wires form the 06 harness into the 04 harness everything else looks good. I just dont know how to get them out of the harness or the plug for that matter without breaking either the plug or the wires
TIM Z 04-18-2009, 09:29 PM Ok, help me out,
The 06 has steering wheel controls previously before you tried installing the 04 wheel?
Or did you install a clockspring with steeering wheel controls in your 06?
jnieberlein 04-18-2009, 09:35 PM Sorry I dont have steering wheel controls in the 06, the wheel with controls and the clock spring for said wheel are out of an o4
TIM Z 04-18-2009, 09:39 PM Mmmm, well did you try the wheel out then? All the buttons work ?
Any Air bag light?
Does Manual mode and tap shift still work with your shifter?
jnieberlein 04-18-2009, 09:44 PM Nope I put the old stuff back in, just so i wouldnt forget where stuff went as soon as I realized there was a plug that didnt plug up I took all of the new (2004 stuff) out and put the old (2006 stuff) back actually it is still in pieces I didnt put the wheel back on yet I was hoping somone would have a "magic way" to remove the pins I could do a swap and then all of the plugs would plug together my gues is the tow haul will not work nor the tap shift since the only wires heading into the shifter are these wires
TIM Z 04-18-2009, 09:49 PM Boy i hear ya, its a lot of work, i replaced a clockspring in my wifes Tahoe and it was a PITA!!
Probably your best bet would be to get an 06 clock spring for your application.
jnieberlein 04-18-2009, 09:51 PM Yeah I was hoping to avoid that but if thats what it comes to then I suppose I will put the steering wheel back on the shelf for another couple years till I get around to finding the money and time to try it all again
callie454 04-18-2009, 09:53 PM Yeah, there's a way. You'll need a terminal tool, or a small flat screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Find the little lock, or "wing" that's on each terminal inside the plug. The lock has to be released in order for the terminal to back out. Gently pry the lock toward the terminal/wire and pull the wire out. This will let you reuse the terminal wires in your '04 harness block.
jnieberlein 04-18-2009, 10:04 PM I knew there had to be a way to do it. Ive got some twiget buddies at work maybe they will have a terminal tool. The wires on the plugs look like they would come out pretty easy I just dont want to force anything and break something, there are a whole bunch of wires I dont really want to buy a new haness if I dont have too, thanks for the advice i will look into it. Heres a fuzzy pic of the wires going into the shifter ( a bigger one in garage still fuzzy though)

callie454 04-18-2009, 10:21 PM can you post smaller pics?
callie454 04-18-2009, 10:27 PM Push your tool of choice through the harness block on the side opposite the wire. Push the locking wing toward the terminal, and pull the wire out. It's hard to explain, but once you get one, even if you break one, you'll see how they're assembled, and you can simply reverse the assembly procedure. Piece of cake once you have the procedure down pat.
callie454 04-18-2009, 10:31 PM Saw the pics in your garage, much easier to see!
TIM Z 04-19-2009, 01:09 AM can you post smaller pics?
:rotflmao::HiHi:
jnieberlein 04-22-2009, 04:02 PM callie, thanks for your help I sat down with my twidget buddy today and he was able to realease the pins with realitive ease I really appreciate your advice I am glad I didnt force anything after I saw how he got them appart I would have broke them for sure, now i just need to move all my pins from one block to the other and see if it works
callie454 04-22-2009, 05:34 PM Atta Boy! I'm glad I could help. Yeah, once you see it done, it's easy. Now you understand why I was writing in riddles! It's hard to explain in this format.
SmokeShow 06-26-2009, 10:02 AM so, the vrdict is???
I'm asking cause I have a friend who wants to put a wheel in his truck with controls.
C-ya
jnieberlein 07-20-2009, 08:05 AM Well the verdict is after moving some wires from the original harrness (tap shift) to the old (new) harrness and rewiring the air bag plug (wrong plug end both sides) I have the new steering wheel in and the truck runs and the air bag has not yet deployed for no apparent reason. So as of right now the controls do not work anything cause I have not had the BCM flashed. But everything else seems to function as it should I am extremly happy that I re wired the air bag correctly.
Anybody know where the instrustions to program the steering wheel controls went? There used to be a detailed set on what to do on the tech II but damn if I can find them now.....
