: Kodiak Tuning
killerbee 04-16-2009, 02:01 AM I am refining a Kodiak/Topkick "wastegate" tune for LLY. Was there a 26 gallon and 40 gallon tank option?
What is the tire size? With those 5.13 gears, what is the speed at 60 mph?
Thanks in advance?
ronjhall 04-16-2009, 08:08 AM There is up to 80 gallon tank option. Not all came with 5.13 gears. Some have 4.44. RPMs are 2000 at 60.
kodiak 04-16-2009, 09:35 AM 34 gallon and 5.13 gears here. No one has found a way to adjust the speedo in these things. I have 40 inch tall tires and mine is off by 13 MPH @ 60. The typical adjustments that you use for the little trucks MPH adjustments, do not apply using Efilive.
Factory tire size for the 4X4 is 33" tall. Which is a 245-19.5 tire
the 2WD size is 225-19.5

Kodiak, have you looked into a tru speed sensor recalibrator from super lift? call super lift and ask if it will work on your truck.
577cc 04-16-2009, 12:05 PM No experience with LLY, but I believe EFI Live "sensor pulses per mile" (H0101) will change the speedo.
DSL Power 04-16-2009, 02:19 PM I have 5.13 gears 4x4 and a 40 gallon tank in mine. I believe all 4x4 models have 5.13 gears. I don't think there was an option for different gearing or a manual trans in the 4x4 models. Someone correct me here if I'm wrong.
FlipinPips 04-16-2009, 02:22 PM For speedometer I use my Predator programmer to input tire size I am running.
cbraga 04-16-2009, 07:43 PM My 4x4 has a 40 gallon tank and 5:13 gears. When I'm on the freeway 65 on the speedo is 75mph at two thousand rpms. My PPE programmer would not work to change the speedometer but I run a scangauge II that has it corect.

103934 is what I changed the H0101 to read...made no difference.:( Something different about these trucks. I would hate to buy a different tuner just to recalibrate my speedo.

Thanks for the info...Ill give them a shout and see how much it costs.
killerbee 04-17-2009, 02:09 PM Have you tried asking Ross to look at the speedo issue?
killerbee 04-17-2009, 02:10 PM Does anyone know why there is a 26 gallon kodiak tune in the library. It seems likely to me that the K/T did not come with 26 gal?

killerbee, on gm's web, single tanks 25,32,40,60,80 and dual tanks 25 and 15 = 40, my topkick pickup has the dual tanks.
EFI Support 04-17-2009, 06:51 PM Have you tried asking Ross to look at the speedo issue?
Michael, if only it was that easy  Paul has spent many an hour trying to resolve Kodiak's issue over MANY months without sucess.
This issue has really been a thorn in our side - for 99% of the queries we receive we are able to resolve with some certainty one way or the other, however we haven't been able to get a concrete result on this one. Which is not only frustrating for us, it certainly doesn't help Kodiak!
For reference, the thread can be found here http://forum.efilive.com/showthread.php?t=8167

Yep...that went on for the better part of 2 years...he finally gave up. If someone figures this out, that would be fantastic.
killerbee 04-18-2009, 12:29 PM Got it. Thanks for the great responses!
7902sc, do your tanks feed together simultaneously?
MeGMfan 04-18-2009, 07:16 PM If you know your ratio and/or tire sizes, this may help

I have 25 and 15 fed as one, no switching

When the front tank gets down, an external electric pump, pumps some fuel into the front tank, from the rear tank, it does this about 6 times from full to empty.
kodiak 04-18-2009, 08:17 PM EfiLive has a great calculator for the gears and tire diameters....but I think the Medium Duties get their calculations for the speedo differently. I can plug in different ratios and tire sizes all day long, and it still will not change the reading. We were thinking that it might have something to do with the transfer case????? I even sent my tunes to a few tuners, including Ross, and they could find no reason as to why it would not work out right.
I guess if someone has a 2WD, we could try to eliminate the transfer case as being the culprit.
Back on the original topic... KB, what are your tuning plans for the Kodiaks and Topkicks? Do you have a backpressure gauge? Obviously, fuel mileage is probably something that is not really a big issue. Maybe a monster torque tune that will keep the backpressure to a minimum? I'd be willing to test out some of your tunes and even send you a couple I have that seem to work well for me and my towing situation if you'd be interested.

I had not heard of a 26 gal myself. Mine is 32 gallons . I know there is 40 and 60 and then a 2 tank option also on some work truck chassis's .
My speedo if off 10mph like cbargas . I run 12R22.5's that are approx 40" tall .
I know you can make some adjustments on kodiak speedo with tech 2 .
Back before the 75mph limiter in mine was killed by my ppe tuner , PPEJoe adjusted my speedo to half to keep me off the limiter till he could figure it out with tuner to kill limiter . Worked and I was at half speed for a few months .
On ratio's , I thought all 4wd's came with 5:13 and the 2wd came with 4:30 or something close to that .

I am going to adapt my light duty LLY tune to suit the big body. I don't see backpressure as a real big issue, taken care of with max vane tables IMO, part of my "wastegate" tuning technique. IMO, GM messed up the LLY, forgetting about the consequences of removing the wastegate, and failing to substitute adequate software substitute.
gasuout 04-19-2009, 04:17 PM Been interested in a wastegate for my LLY for a while . Cant wait to see what you do . :thumb:
In the dunes the sand grabs the tires badly . Coming off the high rpms over a dune and lifting you get a nasty barking turbo . Sounds cool , but definetely not a good idea over and over . Twin set up this would be needed alot also .
You might get in touch with the hucks guys , they are working on a kodiak with twins and could probably really use a good waste gate set up for it . Im sure they are working on it and with the tuning alot also . Maybe they could be of help with some of what your doing . Im sure they have been digging into kodiak ECM alot lately .

killerbee 04-26-2009, 09:30 AM Has anyone had issues trying to lock a Kodiak LLY ECM?
gasuout 04-26-2009, 12:36 PM I havnt ever locked mine up yet . Just got efi live , so we'll see .
kodiak 04-26-2009, 03:33 PM I never tried to lock mine. Can you not get it to lock on the Medium duty???
Tired Old Man 05-05-2009, 12:10 AM I never tried to lock mine. Can you not get it to lock on the Medium duty???
I changed mine from 5:13 to 4:78 just because it was free @ the time, just make sure that when you change spedoo that it is in metric not decimal and it should work fina @ leat mine did

Make sure that you have EFI set to KM not IMP to adjust, mine works super set this way
kodiak 05-05-2009, 08:38 PM Where exactly are you looking??? My "Speedo Adjustment" has both MM and IN as well as KM and MPH
kodiak 05-05-2009, 08:51 PM Okay...I changed my Speedo to KM and have set my "Vehicle speed sensor pulses per KM" to 65938. That should be the correct number for a 5.13 Gear and a 39" tall tire.
Maximum 05-06-2009, 10:25 PM It seems that everyone here is talking about EFI live, Diabalosport and PPE. I have seen a few posts about how Edge doesn't work on the medium duty trucks specifically the LLY. What doesn't work with the edge tuner with these trucks?

cbraga 05-06-2009, 11:30 PM I tried the edge unit and the plugs for the programmer were different than on my truck. I sent it back and went with PPE.

Edge works with 4.5 and 05 LLY motors. I had one for about a year with no problems. The 06 LLY is a different animal though.

They first told me it would work on my 03 C4500, after trying three of them, they finely told me that they did not ever test one on a m/d and that it would not work. problems I had, shutdown, int timeing noise, boost and mass airflow codes. Went with PPE, problem solved, more power and mpgs and no codes. One day I would like to get EFI!!! PPE works great for me now!!!
gasuout 05-07-2009, 10:17 AM Ive ran PPE for 5 years . EFI now . Been playing around with alot of different tunes .
killerbee 05-07-2009, 12:18 PM I finished with the adaptation to the Kodiak/Topkick. I found that a number of differences required modification of the tunes I use in light duty trucks. Shifts are in different spots, for example. I am very happy with the results, and the customer is also.

A funny story, he came to me with overheat concerns. Real nice truck. Forgetting that I frequently put the cart in front of the horse (bed in front of the duramax), I did not screen him for the usual suspect issues. While test driving his truck, I noticed his AC seemed to quit whenever I came to a stop. As he was heading home, he got into a traffic jam, and began heating up. I was embarrassed. Turns out his clutch has been empty of silicone this whole time.
7902sc 05-07-2009, 07:40 PM killerbee,Your worksheet says 04-09. Will your tune work on my 03 4500?????
killerbee 05-08-2009, 09:15 AM Since you live nearby, i would need to be sure of a few things, and would need the truck for a day or 2. You have an earlier model and there are some differences.
