I just noticed my rear seal on my transfer case is leaking. Is there a trick to changing it or is it pretty easy? Never done one before so any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try to find the oem seal, the one with a dust boot to it. The OEM seal is only around $10-15 through GM discounters. Also when installing it, there is a small drain hole in it which you must orient downwards to allow and escape path in case you start to leak. A standard seal without a boot will spray oil all over the underside of the truck when it starts leaking, but it might be cheaper. Just and FYI.

On my 90 full size Blazer, the rear seal started leaking so I replaced it. The new one leaked also. I figured it was old and I would have to live with it. Soon after that, the tranny ran out of fluid. There were no external leaks, no fluid on the ground. After some thought, the only other place the fluid could go was the transfer case. I pulled the refill plug on the T-case and fluid gushed out. OK, that's where the fluid went and that's why the rear seal was leaking. I pulled the T-case to replace the rear seal in the tranny. There is no rear seal in the tranny. After some searching I learned that the seal is in the T-case. The old seal was cracked and obviously bad. Replaced the seal in the T-case and it's been fine since.

I was told by an old school mechanic that the drive shaft bushing should be replaced at the same time as the seal. It wears out at the same rate as the seal and can cause vibration problems if it's worn. A loose bearing will also wear out the new seal fast.

Moral of the story, it's not always a simple fix. The tranny/T-case combo on this truck is different but similar. Keep an eye on the tranny fluid.

You should have found two input seal to the transfer case, One installed to keep tranny fliud in place and one installed the other way to seal the transfer case up. I have also had a tranny burn up due to a bad set of seals and all the fliud leaking to the transfer case. WOW that was a $$$$ lesson for sure.

I don't remember if there were two seals in the NV241 T-case. I do know that the seals don't show up on ANY diagrams that the dealer had. I got a part number from someone on the Internet and ordered it. All it cost me was the price of the seals. Neighbors watching me fight with a transfer case on a windy, raining December morning, priceless (to them).

When I backed out of my driveway the truck took awhile to shift into Drive. As soon as I moved forward, the tranny slipped. I knew something was wrong so I parked it right there. No harm done to the tranny.

I'm not pulling it again to see if there are two seals in there.

I can tell you there was two seals, same part number, install opposite direction from each other between my NV241 and my 4500 5 speed transfer case. If you not sure call your local parts store or drop your truck infomation in your signuture and I'll look it up for you. Better to besure than out a lot of cash again, at least thats how I feel about it.

Thanks for the offer bowtie. It's been holding for a year and a half and I'm not taking that thing out again unless I have to. I keep an eye on the tranny fluid and it hasn't dropped any. I was told this is a common problem with this transfer case.

It's a 90 Blazer, 5.7L 4speed auto (4L60??).
