: Prob with Probe install - Pls Help
TheMonkey 04-23-2005, 02:40 PM i drilled and tapped as per hoot. thanks to the forum for all the info... i was very comfortable going into this.
here is my problem... i put some high temp anti-sieze on the fitting and screwed it in. i put the other fitting over the probe, and slipped the pressure fitting over that. slipped it in, and started to tighten the pressure fitting up. i tightened all the way, and the probe just slips in and out ??? i did it 2x. i'm certain the pressure fitting is in there.
has anyone had this happen?
i went for a spin thinking it would stay in, but it blew out. it was just dangling and the tip did not look like it hit anything. are these delicate? any chance it's forked up?
by the way... this was my first drive *ever* with one of these trucks with edge/attitude. all i can say is holy crap. my brand new tires.... how will they survive? and the smoke !!! i laughed so hard that 2 drops of p came out.
nwpadmax 04-23-2005, 03:02 PM Did you lose the ferrule? (the little brass barrel shaped thingy that compresses within the fitting)....
Don't be hurt if you already know what a ferrule is ...
noreaster 04-23-2005, 03:05 PM the egt probe should have a stop on it, to keep it from backing out. did mine last weekend, wish i had that problem rather than the tap breaking off in the manifold.
nwpadmax 04-23-2005, 03:08 PM There was no "stop" on mine....don't know what you're referring to, noreaster.
Monkey, should go like this: put the main fitting in the manifold. Then slip the compression nut up on the thermocouple. Then slide the ferrule on the TC. It should fit pretty snug. Put the TC in, and then tighten the compression nut, squeezing (actually deforming) the ferrule.
Voila. The ferrule is crimped and she'll be stuck in there pretty good.

Don't be hurt if you already know what a ferrule is ...i did not know it was called a ferrule!
it is in there. but, i guess it's not compressing.
thanks.
nwpadmax 04-23-2005, 03:11 PM Fixed, or no?
nwpadmax 04-23-2005, 03:12 PM It should fit snugly on the TC sheath. If it does not, then it won't grab.
Go to the hardware store and see if you can get a new one.
Sometimes if you try to re-use them after they crimp, they won't work very well.
noreaster 04-23-2005, 03:14 PM my egt probe is the one supplied with edge kit, the stop is like a flange near the top of the probe
TheMonkey 04-23-2005, 03:24 PM doh....
i got it... i had put the first fitting backwards. then, i tried screwing the second fitting onto the npt side, so it didn't screw all the way down to compress.
flipped it, and now i'm off.
thanks for the replies.
nwpadmax 04-23-2005, 03:40 PM Stop monkeying around ....ya doggone monkey http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
You've probably screwed the threads all to hell (since they're different).....but if'n ya got er in there, I guess you're good to go.
noreaster 04-23-2005, 04:02 PM theres always jb weld

most folks would address a problem like that right away. but i'm still trying to figger how i'm going to be payin for tires. 315's and they smoked through 2 gears. i haven't done burnouts since high school.
as far as the p problem... i'll just slip on one of my kids pull-up trainer shorts - one over each leg before i go play in the truck. :Insane:

man... that is awful. really awful. did you hear it go through the turbo?
whatdyado?
noreaster 04-23-2005, 06:14 PM the tap broke in the threads, guess thats what i get with using a cheapo tap. only tap i could find around here. removed it with some needlenose pliers.
had small piece off of the end go into the manifold, got that with a small magnet & used a shop vac to get anything else, just to be safe

i know... it's just happening so fast....
good to hear you managed getting the tap out on your own....
imagine going to the dealer... "so there was this guy... he said he could put a safety mechanism in my truck... and i think he kinda screwed up"
noreaster 04-23-2005, 10:09 PM im just glad i didnt have to pull the manifold off, i learned my lesson no installing of toys on sunday nights. all the hardware stores close by 6. my truck doesnt go to the dealership unless its a warranty thing. i might as well do it myself & burn 300 bucks in the fireplace than deal with those clowns. the last time i dealt with them i got a call from them saying the exhaust is restricting flow & putting in a new stock one would help it more.... ya right:flipa:
