Hiya! Gang,

I have seen a couple of different threads posted in here concerning the "Popping, Banging, Thud" noises or in the seat of your pants feel when backing up your duramax, stopping, or accelerating in our DMAX's. I thought I would weigh in on this finally. It is your slip yoke 98% of the time that is the culprit. The whole issue revolves around the lack of grease or it being washed out over time creating a metal to metal contact. If you think about it the slip yoke is suppose to "slip" inside the output shaft (dont shoot me lol I may have named that wrong) to allow for movement in your drive shaft. If you look at your slip yoke you will see an area roughly 1-2 inches that is nice and clean compared to the rest...(I am ball parking there) indicating movement. Normal. My DMAX did this at 8K after some haggling they ended up replacing my seal at the output shaft housing as well as packing/lubing the splines. This cured my problem for another 24K and wahla as if almost on cue with my warranty about being up it appeared again. I brought to the dealer and they wanted me to pay 80 bucks to pull/pack/lube the slip yoke splines. I asked for the SM took him for a test drive let him listen to it and feel this. Cutting to the chase....there is a NEW TSB that is out in which they are replacing the sliip yokes with a new NICKLE PLATED unit that will hopefully fix the problem. In my truck it was clearly audible in the cab and as he described it, it almost sounded like a squawk. My new yoke is inbound/due in this monday. I "hope" this fixes or atleast pushes out the frequency of this issue less often if that makes sense.

I do think it's a lubrication issue but being in the ForkLift business we saw similiar issues when you mixed dissimiliar metals together in a "joint". Their solution does not suprise me but I still don't think it's the complete answer or fix. All metal to metal joints or areas of contact needs lube they could keep the customers happier and less "b@$#@chy if they would put a zerk fitting grease point there to save us 80 bucks. Yes I know wishful thinking but how much is it really to do this? If it increases customer satisfaction and loyalty...to me it's worth it....IMHO....

Sorry if this is long or winded.....

Peace out....lol here I did it to myself lol :blahblah:

You don't pack the splines. Clean all the old grease out. I hold mine over my shop garbage can and clean it out with brake cleaner. I use a small acid brush to paint a layer of grease on the splines. Later! Frank

I still have the factory warranty so at this point obviously I am not paying for but after the warranty is up is another issue. There is a problem because of the TSB and I think if your dealing with a good reputable dealer they will mostly likely do the repair, if anything under "goodwill".
