: Injector problems?
Mavrick 04-23-2005, 03:41 AM Have a stock 05 2500HD crew cab with only 8000 miles on it. Made a trip to NM and noticed a loss of power and turbo not kicking in until 1500 to 2000 RPM. Took it to a shop in Santa Fe and they diagnosed the problem as oil blowing by the turbo. Had 3 days left on leave and needed to return home. Mechanic told me to watch the oil level and I should make it home fine. Arrived back in Portland OR area and took it to a dealer there told them what Santa Fe said only to have them tell me it was just 4 bad injectors and no mention of turbo issue. That was monday, as of this morning no injectors and they may not show until next week. Anyone know how long it could take to get the Injectors from GM? Also any info on turbo's blowing oil?
Thanks
diesel man 04-23-2005, 04:10 AM dont think the turbo is blowing oil . the injectors could be on backorder . others will chime in .
NCMIC 04-23-2005, 06:55 AM i was checking the injector balancing on my cousin's 05 with 6k miles on it and his #4 injector was high and climbing. it is still within spec but is nearing the point of where GM will do something. the balance on his #3 injector was -5.6. everything else was around -2 and -1.8.
after viewing his, i showed him mine, all of mine are around -1.3 . i have 79k miles on mine.
i asked him if he was using any additives, he had been throwing in Lucas fuel additive. i told him to stop that for now until i research it. i gave him some stanadyne. we will look at the injector balancing after 2 tank fulls and see where it is after that. if it is going back to normal, which may or may not happen, we'll just continue to monitor it.
i have found that some people swear on not using additives, but ever since my 6.5td, i have been using stanadyne. all my injector problems seem to clear up. the one time i didn't use it, i got some bad fuel. poured some in the tank and cleared it up. then had to change fuel filter real fast as i knew that it would be best considering the bad fuel.
i told my cousin that he shoudl not poor anything in his tank that has any alcohol in it. i also told him, that if he couldn't find stanadyne, then get some Power Service Cetane Boost, as it is readily available everywhere.
just my .02 worth on trying to get a hold of the injector problems out there. additives help on these new generation diesels, including the PSD's. Injectors cost too much money, especially on the Fords. The Fords are about $400 a peice, a diesel injection shop owner told me. But if any contaminants get to these injectors, to include water, it could damage them easily. that is why i use stanadyne and or power service. it saves me piece of mind.
stanadyne and racor are recommended by GM. but there arfe others that are good. just do a search on addditives and you shall see. Primrose and FPPF are good a as well.
Good luck with your injectors and hope you get your truck back soon.
Mavrick 04-23-2005, 11:39 AM Thanks for the info. I have been using the Power Service about every other tank of fuel. Think I am going to switch to every tank getting a dose.
NCMIC just curious as to where I can purchase stanadyne? Online preferably.....can't seem to find it locally.
SMD: Check with the DP supporting vendors for Stanadyne. Dmaxallitech sells it (www.gmdieseltech.com). That is where I am going to get my next order.
Mavrick: When I had my injector replaced it took about a week to get it in. Last I heard, GM has a restriction on them and doesn't let the dealers stock them. Something about a high rate of injectors being returned that test ok according to GM.
NCMIC 04-23-2005, 06:37 PM yes you can check with the supporting vendors to see if they carry them. Otherwise you can go to www.stanadyne.com to find local dealers. http://www.**********.com/additive.htm is another place you can find it online. But I would check with the supporting vendors as they will more than likely be bale to get you a deal.

So, what are your thoughts on the Dieselmotive fuel additive made by chevron?
It is more available to me where I am than the standyne additives.
John
NCMIC 04-23-2005, 08:56 PM seems to be good according to description that i can find on it. but i do have a few concerns.
how does it remove the water from the fuel (emulsifier or demulsifier)?
what are the contents that make up the product?
Is there any alcohol in it?
You might be able to read the label on the bottle and answer dsome of the questions?
It may be great to use, considerring that you can get the best mileage from filling at Chevron, in most areas. BP is another good fill up station, as well as Shell. I have seen the best mileage results from those type stations. And I hit stations all over the eastern seaboard.
If you see a truck filling the tanks of the fuelling station, upon arrival, then don't fill up there. Go to another station. It is good practice and I live by it. When they are filling the tanks up, it stirs all the mess up within the tank. and that is what is pumped into your truck. The pump filters don't catch everything, because if they did, we wouldn't have to filter them ourselves.

Like everything else Chevron does, it is like pulling teeth to get ingredients from them. I have found a MSDS for the product, but since I am not a scientist I do not fully understand what each of the listed chemicals is supposed to do. But just in case you are here they are.
1. SOLVENT NAPHTHA, HEAVY AROMATIC
2. AMINATED POLYBUTENYL SUCCINIC ANHYDRIDE
3.DISTILLATES, SOLVENT-REFINED HEAVY PARAFFINIC
4.NAPHTHALENE
5.BENZENE, 1,2,4, TRIMETHYL

NCMIC 04-23-2005, 11:25 PM Well I am not a scientist but I did some research on the chemical names. They all seem to have no association to alcohol. But there is someone that is amongst us members that might chime in. He works for one of the refineries and has a better handle on the chemicals in the fuels and the whole process of refining. He may even know more about any of these chemicals.
as for the results on my cousin's 05, I will know in a few days on if any additive will help his tempered # 4 injector to settle back in line.
i know there is in depth discussion about additives and fuels. just do search on additives and you'll see everyone's suggestions and outcomes from whatever they are trying.
i try to stick to the stanadyne, but in a pinch, i will use the cheap Power Service stuff. it is usually readily available as Walmart, some stations, Auto parts stores and TSC stores. The TSC stores are the cheapest. For those who don't know TSC, it is the Tractor Supply Company.
The best thing about this website is, that we all learn something new everyday. Think of all the headaches we saved ourselves from having with haveing the knowledge base that we have. Thanks to everyone for any and all input as things could have been worse. We could be goung blind and been taken for a ride on many issues that come up.
Thanks for the links guys I'm on it.........sorry to jack the thread Mavrick.

Do a google search, you'll find lots of places to buy it. After my first time on the forum, I googled up Stanadyne and bought a case from a place in Illinois.
The bottles I have are supposed to treat up to 30 gallons, but my tank is 26, and I usually have been putting in about 21 to 22 at fillup time. I have been adding the whole bottle. Will this cause any issues?
