Well I heard a banging noise when I I started 86 Suburban 2 weeks ago and fearing the worst, I dismantled the valve cover and found nothing to be concerned about. Dropped the oil pan and still no extra parts or weird shavings. Before removing the head, pulled the glow plugs (http://thedieselgarage.com/forums/autolink.php?id=6&forumid=46&script=showthread) and found # 2 was broken and fallen through the pre chamber.

Well was thinking of just grinding it down but the what else was on the cyl. wall? Any way am going to remove the piston today and replace it while the head is out and being check.

So Is there a maintenance interval for glow plugs that I missed or am I just lucky?
(there needs to be an avatar with a hammer hitting me on the head)

What brand of glow plugs were you using?

Replacing the piston is a wise move because the piston rings can be pinched within the ring lands if a forgein object is left in the cylinder, especially a glow plug tip.I would also have the connecting rod checked for twists or a bend that could exist.
