: Do I really need it rebuilt?
tazman7 04-11-2009, 06:06 PM I posted a thing on here about a month ago about how I limped my trans and was looking to get a suncoast iv kit put it in. I have only limped it once and it drives fine now except sometimes when it shifts it kinda sounds like it revs up while its shifting, almost as if its slipping a little.. I have put probably 400 miles on it since it limped and have yet to have anymore problems.
Just wondering what everybody elses thoughts were as far as me needing to get my trans rebuilt.
Run it or rebuild it...
Now keep in mind im only 23 years old so I dont have money coming out of my ears, yet.. haha:eek:
SteveFord 04-11-2009, 06:19 PM You can turn the power down and drive until you can afford an upgrade kit. Keeping it turned up your just going to kill it that much faster.
tazman7 04-11-2009, 06:23 PM Sorry forgot to add that I turned it back down to #2
tazman7 04-12-2009, 10:17 AM come on people- there is a poll...start clicking!! :)
Philbilly2 04-12-2009, 10:48 AM I am not positive about you exact situation but,
I have noticed that when I run PPE tunes, it also flairs, it is not in the trans, it is a flair in the Throttle Position when you hit a certian RPM, the throttle position moves to a higher spot and it sounds just like a transmission flair.
If you take the PPE box out and run either somthing different you will notice that the flairing will go away.
I would not worry about your tranny if you have only limped it once. You can limp it a lot more times before you will ever have to address the problem.
Just my $0.02
Horsehaulin 04-12-2009, 10:55 AM I limped mine, it went from a minor flare to not moving my truck in short order. I would turn it back to stock and leave it alone until the trans is done. Just my .02.

See thats what I was thinking was leave it turned down or take the programmer off and keep going until it blows.. it could go in 10 miles or 10000...who knows.
I just thought that since I travel alot and pull trailers and my boat a few hours north to our cabin in the summer months I might as well get it fixed before I become stranded somewhere and have to pay a huge towing fee...
Or maybe I will just sell the ppe and buy efi live.. haha
kfx700rider 04-12-2009, 10:01 PM how many miles do you have on the trans currently, is the fluid dark or smell funny at all that you've limped it?
I too notice that my PPE does kind of flair at certain rpm but usually just clicks the shifts off.
Its really up to you if you want to put down the money.
tazman7 04-12-2009, 10:46 PM trans has 110,000 miles
ill have to check tomorrow on the fluid smell.
I did drain the fluid and added amsoil trans fluid approx 15000 miles ago...the seven quarts it will drains out or whatever it is.
ridered1515 04-13-2009, 12:59 AM kfxrider700...pro avatar! lol-"when Bruce Willis was dead at the end of six sense i... GIZZED in my pants!" haha. nd about the tranny with one limp on it, idk, ive never limped mine but theres guys on here who have limped them like 12+ times...so id jus back down the tuning a lil, and run her, these stock allies are better then some give credit for imo. if you treat em rite-like evryone says watch it on the freeway nd ur good to go.
kfx700rider 04-13-2009, 02:30 AM haha ya i love that song.
Ya just watch the 4-5 shift going WOT. although i never could limp mine, i had a hypertech on lvl 3 before my rebuild. the guy before had it on lvl 3 the whole time, even pulled his holiday trailer with it. And i would drive the crap out of my truck, especially when i first got it and i was still in high school. So its a hit and miss. btw mine had 305 000 Km when it got rebuilt and the clutches were still in good shape, no burn marks or anything.
So just turn down the power, or watch your foot on the skinny go-fast pedal.
Philbilly2 04-13-2009, 06:23 AM 12+... i fit that catagory. I would guess that I must have limped my tranny about 50 to 70 times before I built it. My trans also held quite a bit of power as I was stacking boxes on a stock trans. It just took alot of learn time for it to take it. Each time I would step up the power, I would have to put a few hundred miles on to let the trans learn.
To be honest, most of the time when I tune a stock trans truck involves limping it. Most guys want a tune built that they can give it the max amount that the trans can handle before it limps. I will put a tune in and have them drive the sh*t out of it. If it limps, I go in and change a couple of tables and drive the sh*t out of it again.
One guy's truck that I tuned he limped about 5 times while we were tuning it and since then, he has yet to limp it once in about 6,000 miles. Every truck is differnet.
WHTDMAX06 04-14-2009, 07:38 PM if u can afford it.....build it. if u want a big tune....build it. if u want a mild tune and to be fine for many many years then run lvl 2 and im sure it will be fine.
