: My Tonneau Cover Mistake
Pony Driver 04-22-2005, 07:23 PM before i joined this forum, i had installed a snap tonneau cover...i LIKE the look, but it's a BIG hassel to unsnap and resnap the thing JUST to get something out of or into the bed...
i want to get a retrax, and i ASSUME that my current cover can be dismounted, so i can sell it on e-bay...
does anyone have any experience swapping out tonneau covers?
WAskier 04-22-2005, 07:29 PM How do the snaps attach to the truck? Is there a bar or something that has the male ends of the snaps attached to it? I've never looked at one of those style tonneau covers before so I'm not too familiar with it.
VFRRider 04-22-2005, 08:13 PM Consider a velcro-type like Access Cover or Truxedo.. I've had my Access for almost 2 years and it's still like brand new. If it ever does wear out I'll get another.
Pony Driver 04-26-2005, 08:50 PM waskier...there are alumninum bars on side tops and tailgate top that hold the male snaps...they slide in a channel so they can be perfectly aligned with the female snaps on the tonneau cover
as i said b4, snapp/unsnapping them is a royal PAIN, but it DOES look nice...however, i think a retrax wud be more convenient...
i THINK the rails come off w/o too much trbl, but i'm not sure...
if anyone knows about this, PLZ chime in...
partsguy662 04-26-2005, 09:00 PM I would think that your rails are just attatched with a "topper style" clamp...IF that's the case, it shouldn't take too long to take it off...
Romark1 04-26-2005, 09:14 PM I had an Undercover installed last week. Looks real good and is very strong. Weighs less than 60 lbs and is easy to remove when unlocked.

WAskier 04-26-2005, 10:17 PM Sounds like the rails on there will come right off. In that case, do you want a soft cover again? Or do you want a hard rollup cover?
The hard rollup cover is nice but it takes up space in the bed where as a soft cover takes a little more time to close but doesn't hardly take any room when it's rolled up.
My buddy has a truxedo and really likes it, it doesn't really take that long to open or close and it closes up nice and tight.
I have a custom sized retrax on my truck and it looks great and couldn't be easier to open and close but it sucks that it takes up so much room in the bed.
redneck45 04-27-2005, 08:14 AM romark1, your the first person I have heard about on here that got that cover--I have been eye ballin the undercover for some time! I want a hard cover that is light, and does not need painted, and it has to come off easy and leave me full use of the bed (unlike a roll up cover). My 4 wheeler just fits in the bed with the tail gate up!
hdmax 04-27-2005, 09:51 AM A friend of mine has a soft cover that allows the tailgate to be opened without doing anything to the cover, it also allows the cover too be lifted like a truck. I don't know the brand, but it seems to be a nice setup. I bought the ARE fiberglass type cover because I have heard.seen too many cases where the top is cut open to steal thing from inside the bed, and in some cases, I am sure some vandel cuts them for the fun of it.

new2this 04-29-2005, 05:45 PM I have an Access soft cover on my Ford shortbed. Had trouble with the velcro coming off the rails, but Access sent me new strips. Works well otherwise, nice tight fit. Fords have a tailgate lock so things very secure (unless thief has pocket knife!).
Now looking for my 3500 Duramax longbed: I would like a toolbox and soft cover combination. Does anyone have this setup?
Jim
Beldin 04-30-2005, 12:11 AM I went with a pace edwards myself. Easy install (little costly though), but make sure all the parts are there before starting. Pushing a button to open the cover is a little slice of heaven, and eve the wife cannot screw this one up. ):h
