OK... I just bought my first diesel... a 3/4 ton chevy duramax. I am also new to this site. Could you guys explain in newbie terms some of the power boosting techniques to do to my truck and what the pros and cons are of each?

Welcome.
You might want to do a search, and read the threads in the performance section. Sooo much info, not quickly explained. Look for tuner info, easy power, also easy to overdo..trans has it's limits.

Depends on how much power you want. If you want alot, start saving up for a tranny upgrade. It don't matter who you talk to that says ALLISON's are indestructable - they are easily overpowered even with a little programmer. (Depending on driving habits, and load.) One word of caution - once you start adding power, it's hard to stop. There's tons of things you can do, depends on what you want, how your going to use it, and how much MONEY you have.
