: question that im sure has been asked before but i didn't see in my search
tehbald 04-08-2009, 04:41 AM im looking for some info on what i really need to do with my tranny to keep from blowing it. i am installing a banks stinger kit with the power pack economind tuner. it is supposed to be a 100hp gain max. i ran across another guy and asked him the same question and he recomended the suncoast stage 3 but then i looked and he's a dealer for them so of coars thats what he's going to say. i have looked into suncoast and ats. ats is great but i can't afford it by any means. the best price i have found on a suncoast 3 is like $2,2XX from them diriect. i guess what im getting to here is....is the stage 3 really what i need and if so are those the only brands that make upgrades, and if so is that about the best price im going to find? i am a mechanic and i plan to install what ever kit i get myself and i also have a transmission rebuilder on call that i can probably get to help me. what ever help you guys can offer will be appreciated.
gtmax 04-08-2009, 07:44 AM This vendor was telling you the truth--only wanted to sell you what you need, Suncoast III will do you fine.
goodwrenchtech 04-08-2009, 10:47 AM Call Mike L. as he may have a better idea for ya. He was selling a kit that was a little cheaper and it should be able to hold what you want. Just call him he will not leed you the wrong way.
Mike L. 04-08-2009, 11:47 AM Get the SC 3.
tehbald 04-08-2009, 01:02 PM is that about the best price i can expect or since i own a shop is there anyway i can get it at a wholesale price?
Cloughm 04-08-2009, 01:17 PM If all your doing is banks performance your stock tranny should be fine. They don't make near the hp they claim. I made 103 hp over stock on the dyno with mine and they claimed 140 with just the six gun and pda set on the SL level. If your gunna spend the money on your tranny buy something other than banks. Way over priced in my opinion. They sell nice Hats though!!!!haha
Cloughm 04-08-2009, 01:19 PM A trans JR shift kit would prolly hold a banks kits just fine.
Mike L. 04-08-2009, 01:33 PM I have found in my experience that the Bank's 6 gun is an Alli killer. They put out decent power and the Transgo jr will not help you.
tehbald 04-08-2009, 01:42 PM my thing though is that im not using the 6 gun, i have the economind (formerly ottomind) tuner. it is designed for more power but mostly towing.

tehbald's showing he has an 03--he needs the full Transgo kit, not the Jr that's for use in the later 06+ OEM 6 speeds. Negative side to installing the kit is the trans must come out and partially come appart, if you go through all this trouble the Suncoast kit (which includes the Transgo Shift Kit) and a good converter makes sense.

I also smoked my trans 3 times with the banks 6-gun and SL in my 02 about 5 years ago. Once the truck would not even move afterdone. The c1's I think looked like half moons. Stupid me I did not know about suncoast back then or this place so I just fixed it and went on. The went with a stage 5 from suncoast after talking with them. It was back before you could buy a kit and do it yourself.
tehbald 04-09-2009, 11:09 AM ya know, my wallet doesn't like any of you right now...but honestly thanks for the advice. im thinking i will end up going with the stage III as soon as i can aford it and just stay off of level 5 and 6 until i get it. but then again thats why i got the economind and not he 6 gun because i don't really want to put "that" much power down. does anyone know of anything to do to keep the rear end safe? i don't really know of many problems in little hp but i just want to make sure and see if there is anything i can do to prevent damage.
allisondan 04-09-2009, 02:03 PM Mike...... You can hook him up with a kit

maybe pay better attention to what you read he has a 5 speed not a 6 speed a "Transgo Jr." will not work in his truck.
