: Warranty Question
lokinutz 04-21-2005, 10:46 PM Looking at extending my factory warranty. I have an 03 D/A 4wd 2500 with 23500 miles. Factory 3/36 is up on 6-24-06. The guy at GM told me if I up the warranty to 6/72 before I turn 24k miles on my truck, it will cost $1550. If I wait until after 24k, it will cost $2750 for same warranty. This is the factory bumper to bumper, blah blah blah. GM will do 0% interest for 1 year with auto payments if I want the extended warranty. Question is, has anyone else heard of the $1200 increase after 24K miles, or is this guy full of crap? Is there any shopping around with different dealers on the price, or is it set at GM? I don't want a warranty from a private party/bank/etc. I want this to be a GM factory warranty. Any helpful thoughts or experiences?
2loud 04-21-2005, 11:08 PM I have the extended warranty on my 2001, and the way it works
(I have been told) is it's kind of up to the dealer to some extent.
They play around with the price as they see fit. I have heard of
folks who paid a wide range of prices. In my case I complained
about the price, and they dropped it down (after the sales person
talked to their boss). If my memory is correct, I paid $1700.
mightyvh 04-22-2005, 10:12 AM The credit union I belong to sells extended warranty also and much cheaper then dealer, maybe places like auto club also. I have had both dealer extended warranties and the one like from the credit union. The only advantage with the dealer was it is all in house. If you have a problem with a warranted item they do all the paper work. The disadvantage is you have to use the dealer. The one I got through the credit union, (which is just like an insurance policy or a home warranty spelled out what was or wasn't covered) I could go to any qualified auto repair facility. Once the problem/cost was determind they would call an 800 number and get the OK. The facility would either agree to take the payment from the insurance company directly or you could pay them and be re-imbursed. The credit union itself was not doing the payout but selling these policies for the insurrance company. Anyway when they payed directly to the repair place it was like a credit card over the phone type thing and I never had a problems with it. The dealer warranty was maybe a little easier but the dealer was not too concerned about getting the vehicle back in a timely manner. my advice is shop around. AND REMEMBER that extended warranty is only for the period of time after your regualar warranty runs out. If you get a 5yr/100,000 mi warranty - it doesn't cover the enginge because the DMAX aready has that - so the coverage is for 2 yrs on the other stuff, as you have a 3yr/36000 from GM

But, in response to your question about the price going up after 24k, I think that is a sales tactic. I have bought my plans early, (as in when purchasing the vehicle) but I have bought non-GM plans. But remember to shop around , I would think they are all negotiable.:exactly:
aka108 04-22-2005, 04:17 PM Check other dealers and private insurers. When I bought my truck was told the extended warranty was available at a fixed price up until the time the reqular warranty expired. Didn't buy it as insurance odds are in favor of the house and I generally don't hang on to these new ones long term.
lokinutz 04-23-2005, 02:39 PM Thanks for all your input guys. I will be getting ahold of the warranty guy and see if we can do something better. I figure if I pay $300 or so more for the factory warranty over a private setup, it will be worth it for the ease of service. It sound like the whole reimbersment and a non factory shop will just get me pissed off and feel like Im getting screwed somehow. I do plan on keeping this truck until it is absolutely worn out. I actually have a pretty good service department about 2 miles from my house. I had the brake recall done and they replaced the hydro boost unit, pump, and master cylinder. Then gave me a take home car for the one night they had my truck. Like I said, thanks again for your thoughts.
duramaxdiesel 04-23-2005, 02:51 PM If you're gonna get an extended warranty get a GMPP. And yes, the prices are very negotiable. Just my $.02
Bodysurfer 04-23-2005, 03:14 PM I got something like that in the mail from GM:
For less than 24,000 miles:
-Major Gaurd (36months/54,000miles):
-Total Price: $1550
-Down Payment: $155
-Interest Free Monthly payments: $93.00/15 months
-Deductible: $100
For greater than 24,000 miles and less than 36,000 miles:
-Major Gaurd (36months/54,000miles):
-Total Price: $2140
-Down Payment: $214
-Interest Free Monthly payments: $128.40/15 months
-Deductible: $100
"(This offer is only valid if your vehicle manufacturer's 36 month/36,000 mile limited warranty is still in effect.)"
"Coverage begins when payment is received. The time and mileage limits of the GMPP you selected will be calculated from the date of your GMPP purchase and odometer mileage on the date you purchase your GMPP. Your GMPP expires when you reach your time or mileage limit. whichever come first."
So, do you think this is a good deal or what? To me, it seems that after the orginal 36/36 warranty, that this warranty would continue for another 36 months and/or 54,000 miles. Or, I could be reading this wrong and it just adding miles up to 54,000 but stil within the 36 months.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ???

lokinutz 04-23-2005, 03:33 PM Sounds like we got the same basic offer. I was told an ADDITIONAL 3/36 from renew date/mileage for $1075 or an additional 4/48 for 1550. All before 24K miles on truck. Then the 4/48 goes up to 2750. Like I said, this is time/mileage from renew date. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I am going to talk to the guy on monday and see if I can get a little better deal. Will let you know what I come up with.
Diesel Dragon 04-23-2005, 03:36 PM You can try this dealership in Penn too.
Suposedly they have good prices too.

Diesel Dragon 04-23-2005, 03:46 PM Sounds like we got the same basic offer. Will let you know what I come up with.I looked it up on the other web site and the same coverage for 3/36 before you hit 24,000 miles would be
$805 with 0 deductiable
$700 with $100 deduct
$615 with $200 deduct
4/48 would be
$1280 with 0 deduct
$1060 with $100 deduct
$900 with $200 deduct
4/48 after 24,000 miles on truck would be
$2480 with 0 deduct
$1990 with $100 deduct
$1625 with $200 deduct
Price doubles after you go past 24,000 miles on your truck for some reason
$1280 vs $2480
And if you don't live in Pennsylvania there's no sales tax
