What if you swap on a 6.5 intake and put on one of these filters: http://www.guzzle7pt3.com/petescover.php

Too much hot air?

If you put on the 97+ airbox, which actually uses a filter somewhat like that, you would have a pretty good setup. They might be hard to get a hold of though, the 6.5 guys are already fighting for them.
And I don't think you would even need a 6.5 intake, just find a plastic plenum off of a newer 350, that attaches with the wing nuts.
Hmm ... The hardest problem with intake mods is the oval shape of the inlet on the air filter housing: All tubing you can get is round, not oval. Now if I'd take the air filter out of the housing and use an "external" filter, the tubing from the external filter going to the housing would have to be air thight.
I've no idea if something from another engine would fit, or even if filter housings from gassers would fit on the intake. If I had a spare filter housing, I could experiment with that (like drilling holes along the side), but I don't want to end up having ruined the stock housing and having no replacement for it ...
The advantage of a 6.5 intake would be that you get a round tube to which you can connect something easily. There's even one on a junkyard around here which I could probably pull ... even with the turbo, but I don't want to put on a turbo ...

as long as that thing dont pull in too much hot air from the engine cause i unhooked my intake silencer and turned the airfilter housing a bit so it was drawing air from the enine compartment and there was a noticable drop in power and the engine ran a fair bit warmer so i hooked it back up
Well, I don't have much choice but to let it draw air from under the hood because the transmission cooler is blocking the air intake hole. I put an elbow on the stock tubing so that it's drawing from about under the battery. The air seems to be somewhat colder there than at other places under the hood, and it works ok so far. Just something better would be better :)

The part hes talking about replaces your air cleaner assembly, wing nuts down and has the round tube your looking for.
You can put all kinds of big filters on and even rig up two of them if you want, aint gonna do anything, you need a turbo.
A larger opening to suck in the air, without a turbo, might already help ...

it hooks up to a turbo, not your existing manifold. if you want more air, punch out the knockout on the drivers side and hook up a second pipe to your aircleaner as was done by someone else on here

The radiator is blocking the hole on the drivers side.
