Something to remember: If a Ford or Dodge diesel fan starts doggin' the 6.5, just tell them: At least Chevy had the ba!!s to make their own diesel engine and not rely on someone else!:D

Someone who has had a block crack and cost them thousands of dollars out of pocket may wish GM got Cummins or IH to design their diesel.

You know this statement used to mean that the car, truck, engine etc ...was made over there and shipped here, but not always that case anymore. Toyota and Honda amoung others builds most their cars and trucks right here in good ol USA, in any number of states, employing lots of Americans with good income and benefits. So I always ask this question when someone talks about "Japanese autos" What makes it Japanese ?
Sorry just a question

Your money goes to JAPAN for liscence fees & design rights that is what it means, yes some mfg comes back to US economy but a piece of it still goes to Japan.

What I was trying to add to the thread though was the irony that once GM had gonads to produce it's own engine but now builds a knock off of Japan design even though it's mfg here, & now like everybody else it no longer has it's own engine anymore.

You got it, more Benz than RAM under the hood problem now is you don't know which way is up in global economy, 3 weeks ago I was working for GE Marine Engines, I left after 19 years for better opportunity for Rolls-Royce North America Marine Inc. The RR UK designed engine has more US content in it than the GE USA design does now, go figure.

Duramax is about as Japanese as the New York Yankee's, there is a much bigger corporate picture going on here which has been going on for over three decades. GM is the major stock holder (i.e. owner) of Isuzu a partner ship which started in the 70's. Remember the Isuzu Pup and Chevy Luv. Ford and Dodge have very similar ventures with thier respective Japanese partners. Isuzu is no spring chicken to diesels they have been mass producing industial diesel engines for over 80 years, I think only Caterpillar has been doing it longer. When Dodge introduced its first light duty diesel in 1979 it was a 230c.i. 70hp Mitsubishi. There are still many 80's GM/detriot 6.2's puting down the road today, The same cannot be said about the ford 6.9 (junk from start to finish) which got bored over, a turbo added and became the Navistar 444 (Nice ten dollar term trying to shed its ancestry). Nobody's perfect, but I love a good Ford bashing.

Ahh but, Chev built the first 6.2's for DDA. They even cast the "BowTie" emblem into the timing cover. That soon stopped when DDA took over!! Remember back in '62 when Jeep (re)designed a V-6 but couldn't produce it? They sold the rights to Buick and bought it to install in their chassis. Buick was, and still is quite successful with the concept. I remember the first time my customer looked under the hood of his new Chevrolet and found an Oldsmobile engine in there!!! "What the H...?"

The Japanese have purchased a lot of Eastern Oregon, so I guess the money is still here, so to speak. It appears the cost of beef in Japan is so high that they can buy a ranch (several thousand acres) and grow their own at less cost. Go Figure!

I was looking around the other forum groups in this site and the other day I came across this thread. http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30042
It talks about the make of the Duramax - there is some interesting info in there that I thought you might like to read. But I do have to make a statement that those durabucks people sure like to bicker. Almost everyone I read it is someone saying the other one doesn't know what his is talking about. The 6.5 group is much more my style. Keep up the good conversations!!!

Be careful with the Detroit Diesel thing because they are now owned by Daimler Chrysler....

I don't a 6.9 and a Navistar 444 have anything in common, except they were both used in Ford trucks.
