: Routing Cable into cab on backup camera
txdutt 04-06-2009, 09:38 PM I installed a VR3 camera on my truck a few weeks ago, the quality of the wireless picture is spotty. I bought the cable to hardwire the camera to the monitor but on a cursory look under the truck the only entry point I could find into the cab directly was the emergency brake cable grommet under the drivers side. It looked like the other electrical wire bundles all went up to the engine compartment. I didn't look at the passenger side yet. Any other "easy" entry points into the cab? Not too crazy about messing up the e-brake cable or drilling into the cab floor...
floriduramax1 04-06-2009, 09:44 PM I like the e-brake entry myself!
nekkidhillbilly 04-07-2009, 02:42 AM e brake and theres one around the steering shaft thats nice too
txdutt 04-07-2009, 10:55 PM I'll get under it again this weekend, probably will through the e-brake grommet & then caulk the ^%$# out of it to be sure it's sealed
A1deerhunter 04-08-2009, 01:29 AM I believe there is a vent in the cab between the cab and bed. You will have to run it under the carpet.

there is and you can run it under the plastic and up around under the sill panles
txdutt 04-08-2009, 07:44 PM Hopefully the NBS trucks will still have that, I'll find out this weekend!
MAX4X4 04-09-2009, 04:18 PM I went through the e-brake grommet in the floor.
nekkidhillbilly 04-11-2009, 05:41 AM the main harness has one that is easy to run past
jtd21180 04-13-2009, 10:53 AM if the truck is not a standard cab use the gromit for the e- brake cable. most of the aftermarket cameras come with only so much wire and its best not to extend it. i've installed these on tons of trucks in my area including mine and never had any problems using that as a point of entry into the cab.
txdutt 04-14-2009, 10:42 PM finally "got er done" tonight, ran the cable through the e-brake grommet-was actually pretty easy, now just have to shoot a little bit of silicone to be sure the grommet is sealed up..
bigfoot04 04-15-2009, 08:56 AM Thats what I did too. I actually cut the grommet and ran the wires through it to keep the wires from being pinched when i pushed it back in place and it sealed up fine. But I also ran an 8 guage power on off for the air horn compressor too and there was no sticking the grommet back in with 8 guage wire going around it. So I had to cut mine.
HeRattle 04-15-2009, 09:05 AM Where did you guys get the eye. I have the monitor on my head unit and already have the av cable ran to the back seat. Just cant find an eye without the monitor and all the other bs that goes with it..
bigfoot04 04-15-2009, 09:15 AM Crutchfield sells some good ones that are just the eyes. I bought mine from my local aftermarket store for like $75.
bigfoot04 04-15-2009, 09:17 AM I wouldnt get a license one though. I have a single mount one that I mounted to the drop hitch. It enables you to see the hitch a lot better.
HeRattle 04-15-2009, 09:27 AM Could not find it in crutchfield but I suck at surfing the net.. Found one on ebay for 22 bucks but don't know it that is what I am lookin for.
bigfoot04 04-15-2009, 09:48 AM Type in the search block of crutchfield, backup camera and they have 26 of them pop up. PM me if you need more assistance.
HeRattle 04-15-2009, 10:04 AM Wow, they think highly of them for sure. Might have to go to an El-cheapo on ebay.
jtd21180 04-15-2009, 12:40 PM I have a drop hitch and i used a plate frame camera, i can see the ball just fine. and its in line with the ball so its very easy to hook up to it. I thought about the one in the tail gate but then i would have to disconnect it to remove the tailgate. You can get very crafty with this things. I have put them on the back of trucks with a quick release so the customer could also put a camera on the back of their trailler, or on their salt spreader or in their horse trailer.
MAX4X4 04-15-2009, 12:49 PM My license plate camera swivels so you can aim it down to the ball if you want.
Mike Miller 04-15-2009, 01:14 PM My truck is an 01 but I brought all items, gage wires, boost psi, propane control, etc through the door harnes on the drivers side. Worked pretty good, just cut a small slit to enter the wire loom. Not sure about your truck but worked well on mine. If you would like a photo let me know. Good luck.
Mike Miller 04-15-2009, 01:17 PM I should a read page two :D
thohawk 04-15-2009, 02:47 PM I would like to see the pic. Never thought about coming through the door harness.
Charlie B 04-16-2009, 06:54 AM Maybe I'm old school, you just drill a hole behind the rear seat in the corner on the drivers side of the truck put a grommet in [parts stores have them] pull the sill plate [very easy] run the cable under the sill plate [plenty of room] up the kick plate behind the e-brake pedal , up the side of the dash to the visor and hook it up to the camera. Cable is safe[ no wire ties] truck is sealed and neat. When you cut through other grommets and push wires and cables through, your defeating the purpose of the grommet anyway by sealing it with silicone. Then, if you have other wiring problems, you have to deal with the silicone and will probably have to replace the grommet anyway. Cable and other wires under the sill plate are out of site out of mind. Just my thoughts again. Charlie
bigfoot04 04-16-2009, 07:06 AM That's the way I ran the camera im my avalanche, just was lazy this time and didn't want to drill another hole and went through the e-brake hole instead. It sealed up nicely even though I cut it. Plus all the TV wires, and system wires, run through my drivers side channel and I do not want to get any interference from the 8 gauge power wire for the crompressor in the TV's. I dont think I could slide another wire through that channel even if I wanted too........lol

In our installs, we use a small jacketed multi-conducter cable and simply "stretch the e-brake grommet and pull the cable thru. No cutting or silicone required, it seals right back up.
Charlie B 04-16-2009, 10:56 AM I understand everyone has different situations, I was just giving my 2 cents worth, in todays world it's probably not even worth the 2 cents. Thanks Charlie
bigfoot04 04-16-2009, 11:06 AM Nah its allgood Charlie. Its nice to know there are multiple ways to run them through and I never thought of the rubber grommets. Thanks for the advice "2 cents".
Riverguy553 04-16-2009, 06:16 PM Make sure its sealed really good!
txdutt 04-16-2009, 08:20 PM I had enough fun drilling throught rear bumper & license plate to run the camera leads, didn't want to mess with the cab of the truck if I didn't have to!
nekkidhillbilly 04-17-2009, 08:49 AM Where did you guys get the eye. I have the monitor on my head unit and already have the av cable ran to the back seat. Just cant find an eye without the monitor and all the other bs that goes with it..
ebay has em for 20 bucks thats all i got it works good i have no problems with it i got the one and drilled the metal part in between the gate and bumper on the bed
Mike Miller 04-20-2009, 11:03 AM I would like to see the pic. Never thought about coming through the door harness.
Here ya go, took me a while, operator error with camera :D
thohawk 04-20-2009, 11:12 AM Thanks for the pic's Mike.
