freind of mine just bought one like this, had a heck of a time finding front and rear brakes and calipers for it,each caliper had 4 or 6 pistons, they finally found out they were made for ambulances
toddman35 04-06-2009, 07:04 PM Is that molding around the front fenders an OE part or aftermarket? I'd like something like that to help keep some spray down off my front fenders.
KungFooMASTA 04-06-2009, 07:22 PM My friends dad had one Identical to that except it was a 5speed. It was a 3500HD they had heavy duty frames that were like 14" tall rails solid front axle 2wd, 19.5 wheels and that 14 foot bed It was a limo. They had a flat bed on it but with that wheelbase and 2wd they said you could spit on the ground and it would get stuck. I would like to have one of those with a shorter bed. The HDs were built by a conversion company but I cant think of what it was.

OEM on the HD's
KungFooMASTA 04-06-2009, 07:37 PM I dont think they are really that rare at least not around here most of the time they are set up as bucket trucks, and dump trucks. They are comparable to Ford f450s. But they are older so you might not see them as often anymore
RCpullerdude 04-06-2009, 07:40 PM The HDs were built by a conversion company but I cant think of what it was.
They were not built by a conversion company. They are totally GM. They were, however, upfitted to 4X4 by conversion companies.

I think by rare, he is referring to the crew cab part. Most HD's are regular cabs.
NICHOLS LANDSCA 04-06-2009, 10:01 PM OEM on the HD's
I think he meant the black fender piece that is aftermarket, available at any off road shop. Try JC Whitney

I agree. Doesn't look too great though, IMHO.
Brooklyn tow 04-06-2009, 10:10 PM Maybe i'm wrong.........but thats the 1st 3500HD Crew Cab Iv'e seen.

IIRC, I've seen two others. The CC HD is not a common site.
oldbrownsierra 04-06-2009, 10:49 PM I seen a tow truck like that was once. Thought this was at first glance.
DURAtotheMAX 04-07-2009, 12:00 AM Cool find; Ive never seen a 3500HD crew cab either. Odd that it has nice front seats, power windows/locks, yet a base model radio and no AC. :confuzeld:

Elvis knows 04-07-2009, 12:31 AM That ebay listing is a Chassis-Cab. I don't know if the "HD" is what is supposedly rare, but I don't think they made Chassis-Cabs in anything but "HD" even if they may not have had that designation. It's not that unusual for them to be crew cab, but most are going to have some type of aftermarket bed - service body, wrecker, etc. It is true that Chassis-cabs are more rare than pickups.
There are 18 C/K 3500 crew cabs for sale on Auto Trader:

What you found is 3500's..........not 3500HD
Elvis knows 04-07-2009, 04:32 AM What you found is 3500's..........not 3500HD
It looks like you're right. None of them are chassis cabs either.
Weren't all chassis-cabs HDs?
Brooklyn tow 04-07-2009, 11:34 AM Havn't seen any without some kind of utility body or wrecker body, flatbed........and thats the first crew cab (4 Door) iv'e seen.
4x4toys 04-07-2009, 11:58 AM I would love to have it and put a bed on it and extend the bed to fit the long frame
KungFooMASTA 04-07-2009, 11:17 PM I still think they were built by a conversion company though they were probably still sold at GM dealers. My friends had a emblem or sticker on the inside of the door that said GVRW which was higher than a normal 1 ton IIRC it was 24000 and it said under that the conversion companys name it is a common company I just can remember what it was.

I thought the 3500HDs were in the 14-16k gvwr range?

24K Is more than the normal C3500HD as posted in the link. The one posted in the link has nothing to do with any conversion companies, it is pure GM.
trapp2012 04-08-2009, 06:51 PM I personally think that aall of these truck where built by the General Motors Co. All of them that truck would cost double if they made it somewhere else then who would buy them. Big commercials would thats about it. We couldn't aford that then and now huh Nope.Ok these trucks were all made by the GENERAL MOTORS CO. , what dont we get about this. There was no other help by and outer company. If you guys thought about that that little "RARE RIG C3500" would cost TWICE AS MUCH as it would be if GM didn't build it. LOOK AND THINK ABOUT THE ECONOMICS PEOPLE. This truck NOT A CUSTOM TRUCK AT All ITS A 2 wheel drive K3500 ok. Just leave it.

Not quite. It's a C3500HD. It bridges the gap between the C/K truck and the Kodiak/Topkick. GVWR's, as Toddman said, in the 14-18K range. But you are correct in that they were GM built. Upfitters may have added bodies though, and I know a few did 4X4 conversions to them. They have the filler panel in the front, normally with a normal gasser bumper. They also have solid front "I" beam axles like larger trucks. If you also take notice, they have 10 lug wheels. The interesting part is they have 5 lug front hubs that use every other hole, so the duals are still interchangeable in all positions.
Brooklyn tow 04-08-2009, 07:13 PM RC and trapp are correct........The only thing that would be custum is the "Body".....for example, the body on my truck is made by "Dynamic"....it's a self loader wrecker body.
I believe the conversion co. being talked about is the "body"....weather it had a flatbed, stakebed, utility and so on......The only thing that is rare is that C3500HD's are usually regular cab.......The crew cab is rare and I would think an extended cab would be, well, never seen an extended cab HD.

I don't think they made an extended cab HD, did they? IIRC, it was only RC's and CC's.
trapp2012 04-08-2009, 07:16 PM Previous owner could have switched the badges also. There are so many variables. Does this trucks carfax register as a C3500 or what.

Brooklyn tow 04-08-2009, 07:23 PM negative......being a HD guy, the 19.5's and the 5 lug front wheel and ten lug rear wheel, the size of the frame rails, filler panel under the grill, give it away.......and the HD's sit a little more stout.....and don't forget the solid I beam front axle, and leaf spring setup.
